Boyden–Hull Community School District is a rural state school, public school district headquartered in Hull, Iowa. Most of the district is in Sioux County, Iowa, Sioux County while a portion is in Lyon County, Iowa, Lyon County and serves the cities of Boyden, Iowa, Boyden and Hull, and the surrounding rural area. It operates Boyden–Hull Elementary School in Boyden, and Boyden–Hull Junior/High School in Hull, which houses the district's headquarters. History The first students graduated from Hull High School, within the Hull Public School system, in 1891. In 1915, John Torrance McRuer was reelected superintendent of Hull Public Schools. The institution offered kindergarten and primary school, as well. A successor of McRuer's, F. J. Stamper, took on the role, then was replaced by W. A. May for the 1924–1925 school year. Hull is a city in Sioux County, Iowa. The population was 2,384 at the time of the 2020 census. History The first settlers in the Hull area arrived in 1872. The city was incorporated on May 15, 1886. Hull was named for John A. T. Hull, a member of the United States House of Representatives from Iowa. It was previously named Pattersonville for John G. Patterson, before changing its name to Winland then finally Hull in the 1880s. In 1993, The Foreign Candy Company of Hull became the first American firm to import Warheads (candy). Boyden–Hull Junior/High School
Boyden–Hull Junior/High School is the only public middle and high school located in Hull, Iowa, United States. It is a part of the Boyden–Hull Community School District. Their mascot is the Comet. The school's athletic teams compete in the Siouxland Conference. A few sports are shared with Rock Valley High School, a fellow Siouxland Conference member. The combined teams are known as the Nighthawks. History The merger that created Boyden–Hull Community School District was approved in a December 1958 vote of the Sioux County board of education. Boyden and Hull were separate school districts until July 1, 1959. The first school board election as a consolidated school district had taken place in March 1959, followed by the first classes on August 31, 1959. West Sioux Community School District
West Sioux Community School District, or West Sioux Schools, is a rural public school district headquartered in Hawarden, Iowa. It operates Ireton Elementary School, Hawarden Elementary School, and West Sioux Middle School/High School in Hawarden. The district is mostly in Sioux County with a small section in Plymouth County. The district includes Hawarden, Ireton, and Chatsworth. History The first country school in Sioux County, Iowa, was built by 1869 in Calliope. The educational institution was rebuilt in 1881 and moved in 1883. After the third building burned down, the school relocated again. By the 1890s, Hawarden High School had been built. John Torrance McRuer
Duane Torrance "Mac" McRuer (October 25, 1925 – January 24, 2007) was a scientist, engineer, and expert in aircraft flight and other vehicle controls who cofounded Systems Technology Inc. in 1957. He made many contributions to the theory and practical application of human-machine interaction and control. Early life and education McRuer's father, John Torrance McRuer, and his mother, Ruth Inez Bartlett, graduated from Park College in Park City, Missouri in 1910.
