Bowls England National Championships (Men's Fours)
The men's fours is one of the events at the annual Bowls England National Championships. History From 1905 until 1914, the event was called the Charles Wood Australian Cup. During the 1908 final, the skip of the Upper Clapton team Mr H. Grounds collapsed and died during play. The title was awarded to Carlisle Edenside. Bowls England National Championships
The English Bowls Association was the governing body of bowls in England until 2007. From 2008 onwards, Bowls England was formed, which now runs the sport. The national finals for bowls are held annually, where either 1, 2 or 3 representatives from each county compete for the national titles. Below is a record of all English Bowls Association (EBA) and Bowls England champions. This is a unique record of these champions, as EBA and Bowls England champions will never be recorded together in official handbooks. In addition, only the name of the club of the successful participants has been recorded in the past. Bowls England was inaugurated after two associations unified to form it, the English Bowling Association (EBA) and the English Women's Bowling Association (EWBA). Gary Smith (bowls)
Gary Andrew Smith (born 13 October 1958) is a former English lawn and indoor bowler and is the Chief Executive of World Bowls. He is not to be confused with the Durham indoor bowler Gary R Smith. Bowls career Smith partnered Andy Thomson when they won the 1993 World Indoor Bowls Championship Pairs. He started playing at the age of 15 and played for the Blackheath and Greenwich bowls clubs and the Cyphers indoor club at Beckenham. Smith also won the EIBA Pairs in 1986, 1991 & 1994 and Fours in 1983, 1984, 1988, 1990, 1992 & 1993. In 1988 he experienced Singles success after winning the EIBA Singles and one year later captured the 1988 CIS Insurance UK singles title. Les Gillett
Leslie John Gillett (born 17 November 1970) is an English international indoor and lawn bowls player. He is nicknamed Razor. Bowls career Indoor career Gillett won the 2001 World Indoor Bowls Championship pairs title in Great Yarmouth with bowls partner Mark McMahon. Sixteen years later he won his second title when he won the Open pairs with Jason Greenslade at the 2017 World Indoor Bowls Championship in Great Yarmouth. At the 2022 World Indoor Bowls Championship, Gillett (as the sixth seed) finally won the Open singles title after defeating five-time champion Paul Foster in a tie-break set in the final. Gillett won the first set by virtue of overtaking Foster's lead during the final ends. Foster comfortably won the second set before Gillett won the tie break. Robert Newman (bowls)
Robert Newman (born 1975) is a former English international bowls player. Bowls career Newman won three bronze medals in the World Bowls Championship. The first two in the triples and fours at the 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Ayr followed by another bronze in the fours at the 2008 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Christchurch. Gary P Harrington (born 1962) is a former English international lawn bowler. Bowls career Harrington won a National Championship in 1993 when he won the Champion of Champions title.
