Bowes
Bowes is a village in County Durham, England. Located in the Pennine hills, it is situated close to Barnard Castle. It is built around the medieval Bowes Castle. Geography and administration Civic history Bowes lies within the historic county boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire, but along with the rest of the former Startforth Rural District it was incorporated into the non-metropolitan county of Durham for administrative purposes on 1 April 1974, under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972. The A66 and A67 roads meet at Bowes. History The Roman name for Bowes was Lavatrae. A Roman fort was located there, which was re-used as the site for Bowes Castle. The place-name 'Bowes' is first attested in a charter of 1148, where it appears as ''Bogas''. This is the plural of the Old English ''boga'' meaning 'bow', probably signifying an arched bridge. Bowes Primary School
Bowes Primary School is a coeducational primary school with a nursery and a reception class. It is located between Stanley Road and Highworth Road on the North Circular Road section of Bowes Road in New Southgate in the London Borough of Enfield. History At the School Board meeting on 6 April 1900, Messrs. W. Lawrence and Son of Tottenham were successful with a tender of £18,149 to build Bowes Road School, which was planned for 10 local pupils. A tender for electrical installation for £619 was unsuccessful, as it was £395 higher than the successful tender for installing gas fittings. Bowes Road School for Infants opened at 9am on 2 September 1901, and separate Junior Boys and Girls Schools opened on the upper floors. In 1927, the schools were reorganised into two schools, Senior Mixed and Junior Mixed with Infants. Bowes Railway
The Bowes Railway, built by George Stephenson in 1826, is the world's only operational preserved standard gauge cable railway system. It was built to transport coal from pits in Durham to boats on the River Tyne. The site is a scheduled monument. The railway is open every week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Easter til October) as well as on a number of event days throughout the year. History Background The ''Grand Allies'', a partnership of businessmen including John Bowes, opened a colliery at Springwell in Durham. A railway was needed to transport the coal to the River Tyne. The plan was to build inclined planes and use a combination of steam power and gravity to move the coal wagons. Bowes Railway Station
Bowes railway station was situated on the South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway between Barnard Castle and Kirkby Stephen East. History The line was opened on 26 March 1861 when a mineral train was run, the line opened to passengers on 8 August 1861 following an opening ceremony the day before. The station served the village of Bowes. The station was host to a camping coach in 1933 and from 1937 to 1939 and possibly also in 1934. The station was closed by British Railways North Eastern Region on 22 January 1962. The site today The station buildings are now (2008) in an extreme state of dereliction. A large farm shed covers a portion of the platforms and yard. The signal box, which for many years after closure was hidden away inside the farm shed, was dismantled and is in storage. Bowes Station
Bowes Station is a pastoral lease and sheep station located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It is approximately to the south-east of Kalbarri and to the west of Mullewa. The station was established in 1850 by brothers William and Lockier Burges, when they applied for land in the newly discovered Champion Bay district. William Burges moved from his original property, ''Tipperary'' (near York), and by 1857 was grazing sheep on 93,000 acres. He subsequently bought rams descended from the royal flock of George II, settling them first at Bowes and later taking them to Yuin Station. In 1859, Thomas Burges, William's nephew, took over Bowes Station. Thomas' son William Burges was born on the station in December 1865 and following his schooling returned to the property to manage Bowes. He retired in about 1912 and died in 1942. Bowes Castle
Bowes Castle is a medieval castle in the village of Bowes in County Durham, England. Built within the perimeter of the former Roman fort of Lavatrae, on the Roman road that is now the A66, the early timber castle on the site was replaced by a more substantial stone structure between 1170 and 1174 on the orders of Henry II. A planned village was built alongside the castle. Bowes Castle withstood Scottish attack during the Great Revolt of 1173–74 but was successfully looted by rebels in 1322. The castle went into decline and was largely dismantled after the English Civil War. The ruins are now owned by English Heritage and run as a tourist attraction.
