Boudjemaâ El Ankis (born Casbah of Algiers, 17 June 1927 – died Algiers, 2 September 2015), also known as Mohammed Boudjemaâ, was an Algerian performer of chaâbi music, who also played the mondol The Algerian mandole (mandol, mondol) is a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin, widely used in Algerian music such as Chaabi, Kabyle music and Nuubaat (Andalusian classical music). The name can cause confusion, as .... He was known in Algeria for his more than 300 songs and for being imprisoned by the French from 1957-1960, for his protest of their occupation of Algeria. He became a "pioneer" of Algerian music while working with lyricist Mahbou Bati and inspired a new generation of chaabi musicians. Casbah Of Algiers
The Casbah ( ar, قصبة, ''qaṣba'', meaning citadel) is the citadel of Algiers in Algeria and the traditional quarter clustered around it. In 1992, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed ''Kasbah of Algiers'' a World Cultural Heritage site, as "There are the remains of the citadel, old mosques and Ottoman-style palaces as well as the remains of a traditional urban structure associated with a deep-rooted sense of community." Chaabi (Algeria)
Chaabi is a traditional music of Algiers (Algeria), formalized by El Hadj M'Hamed El Anka. Originally from the Casbah, the music known as chaabi belongs to a tradition of recent origin. It emerged during the 1930s, and has lost none of its power of attraction up to the present time. Inspired by vocal traditions of Andalusi music, such as muwashshah, using its modes and rhythm. ''Chaabi'' means 'of the people', and it's very definitely the people's music, even in a country where Raï rules. A typical song features mournful, Arabic/Berber vocals, set against an orchestral backdrop of a dozen musicians, with violins and mandolins swelling and falling to a piano melody and the clap of percussion beats. Chaabi is part of a deeply conservative tradition and its lyrics often carrying a strong moral message. The Algerian mandole (mandol, mondol) is a steel-string fretted instrument resembling an elongated mandolin, widely used in Algerian music such as Chaabi, Kabyle music and Nuubaat (Andalusian classical music). The name can cause confusion, as "mandole" is a French word for mandola, the instrument from which the Algerian mandole developed. The Algerian mandole is not however a mandola, but a mandocello sized instrument. The instrument has also been called a "mandoluth" when describing the instrument played by the Algerian-French musician, Hakim Hamadouche.
