The Boston mayoral election of 1963 occurred on Tuesday, November 5, 1963, between Mayor of Boston John F. Collins and Boston City Council member Gabriel Piemonte. Gabriel Francis Piemonte (January 28, 1909 in Boston, Massachusetts – June 30, 1991 in Boston, Massachusetts) was an American attorney and politician who was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1947 to 1952 and the Boston City Council from 1952 to 1960, 1962 to 1964, 1966 to 1968, and 1970 to 1974. In 1952 and from 1970 to 1972 he was the Council President. The Boston City Council is the legislative branch of government for the city of Boston, Massachusetts. It is made up of 13 members: 9 district representatives and 4 at-large members. Councillors are elected to two-year terms and there is no limit on the number of terms an individual can serve. Boston uses a strong-mayor form of government in which the city council acts as a check against the power of the executive branch, the mayor. Massachusetts Senate
The Massachusetts Senate is the upper house of the Massachusetts General Court, the bicameral state legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Senate comprises 40 elected members from 40 single-member senatorial districts in the state. All but one of the districts are named for the counties in which they are located (the "Cape and Islands" district covers Dukes, Nantucket, and parts of Barnstable counties). Julius Ansel
Julius Ansel (March 27, 1908 – March 13, 1965) was an American politician who was a member of the Boston City Council from 1948 to 1951, the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1953 to 1955 and again from 1959 to 1965, and the Massachusetts Senate in 1965. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Mayor of Boston in 1963. Ansel was born in Vilnius, Russian Empire, to Hyman Ansel, who worked as a grocer in Boston, and Bertha Ansel. He immigrated to the United States in 1910 and became a citizen in the 1920s. He left school after the eighth grade. He was wounded in France during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. Ansel died in Carney Hospital in Dorchester, aged 57, after suffering a heart attack. A much beloved figure in Boston, Ansel's death brought out thousands of people who mourned him at services at Congregation Agudath Israel in Dorchester and Levine Chapel in Brookline.
