Boston City Council Election, 2001
Boston City Council elections were held on November 6, 2001. Nine seats (five representatives and four at-large members) were contested in the general election, as the incumbents for districts 1, 5, 8, and 9 ran unopposed. Two seats (districts 3 and 6) had also been contested in the preliminary election held on September 25, 2001. At-large Councillors Francis Roache, Stephen J. Murphy, and Michael F. Flaherty were re-elected. Councillor Peggy Davis-Mullen did not seek re-election, as she ran for Mayor of Boston, losing in the mayoral election to incumbent Thomas Menino. Davis-Mullen's at-large seat was won by Maura Hennigan, who had been the District 6 councillor since 1984, and a member of the council since 1982. Boston City Council
The Boston City Council is the legislative branch of government for the city of Boston, Massachusetts. It is made up of 13 members: 9 district representatives and 4 at-large members. Councillors are elected to two-year terms and there is no limit on the number of terms an individual can serve. Boston uses a strong-mayor form of government in which the city council acts as a check against the power of the executive branch, the mayor. The Council is responsible for approving the city budget; monitoring, creating, and abolishing city agencies; making land use decisions; and approving, amending, or rejecting other legislative proposals. The Boston mayoral election of 2001 occurred on Tuesday, November 6, 2001, between incumbent mayor Thomas Menino and City Councilor Peggy Davis-Mullen. Menino was re-elected to a third term. Mark Ciommo
Mark Ciommo (born November 19, 1956) is a Boston teacher and politician, who formerly served as a member of the Boston City Council representing District 9 (Allston–Brighton). Early years Ciommo was raised in Allston-Brighton by Louise Rufo, a single mother. He was the first of his family to attend college, earning a B.S. from Suffolk University. Career Before running for office, Ciommo worked as a teacher for at-risk youths and as Assistant Director of the Jackson Mann Community Center, and was Executive Director of the Veronica B. Smith Multi-Service Senior Center in Brighton for 14 years. Ciommo ran for the District 9 seat on the Boston City Council in 2002, in a special election following the death of councilor Brian Honan, but lost to Jerry McDermott. Brian Honan (April 2, 1963 - July 30, 2002) was the Democratic city councilman representing the neighborhoods of Allston and Brighton. Personal life He graduated from St. Columbkille High School, Boston College and the New England School of Law. Honan died four days after surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. The surgery was to remove a cancerous tumor in his bile duct. At the time of his death, he was running to become the District Attorney in Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
