The Boston Artists' Association (1841–1851) was established in Boston, Massachusetts by Washington Allston, Henry Sargent, and other painters, sculptors, and architects, in order to organize exhibitions, a school, a workspace for members, and to promote art "for the art's sake." History According to the group's constitution: "The artists of Boston, deeply impressed with the importance of their profession, and with the necessity of a systematic course of study for its successful culmination; also with the advantages to be derived from mutual co-operation and support, resolve to form themselves into an association for the furtherance of these objects. In so doing, they pledge to each other their honor as gentlemen, to lay aside all ungenerous, envious, or selfish feelings, and to seek the advancement of the arts alone, for the art's sake." Joseph Edward Billings
Joseph Edward Billings was an architect in Boston, Massachusetts, in the mid-19th century. Among his business partners were his brother Hammatt Billings and Charles Frederick Sleeper. William Wetmore Story
William Wetmore Story (February 12, 1819 – October 7, 1895) was an American sculptor, art critic, poet, and editor. Life and career William Wetmore Story was the son of jurist Joseph Story and Sarah Waldo (Wetmore) Story. He graduated from Harvard College in 1838 and the Harvard Law School in 1840. After graduation, he continued his law studies under his father, was admitted to the Massachusetts bar, and prepared two legal treatises of value — ''Treatise on the Law of Contracts not under Seal'' (2 vols., 1844) and ''Treatise on the Law of Sales of Personal Property'' (1847). He soon abandoned the law though to devote himself to sculpture, and after 1850 lived in Rome, where he had first visited in 1848, and where he counted among his friends the Brownings and Walter Savage Landor. Richard Morrell Staigg
Richard Morrell Staigg (7 September 1817 Leeds, England - 11 October 1881 Newport, Rhode Island) or R.M. Staigg was a portrait painter in Boston, Massachusetts, in the 19th century. Biography When he was about thirteen years of age he was placed in an architect's office, and he subsequently received a few weeks' instruction in portrait painting. In 1831 he came to the United States with his father, and four years later he settled with the family in Newport. In his artistic efforts he met with encouragement and advice from Washington Allston, and soon devoted himself entirely to miniature painting. William Sharp (1803–1875) was a British-born painter who is credited with introducing chromolithography to America in 1840.Meggs, Philip B. Henry Cheever Pratt
Henry Cheever Pratt (1803–1880) was an American artist and explorer. He lived in Boston, Massachusetts. Biography Born in Orford, New Hampshire, and trained by Samuel F.B. Morse, Pratt painted landscapes of Maine on painting trips with Thomas Cole and of the American Southwest while on boundary surveying expeditions. John Russell Bartlett's ''A Personal Narrative of Explorations and Incidents in Texas, New Mexico, California, Sonora and Chihuahua'' (2 vols., 1854) contains 30 of Pratt's illustrations. Pratt's paintings include ''View of Smith's West Texas Ranch'' (1852) now owned by the Texas Memorial Museum at the University of Texas. Fitz Henry Lane
Fitz Henry Lane (born Nathaniel Rogers Lane, also known as Fitz Hugh Lane) (December 19, 1804 – August 14, 1865) was an American painter and printmaker of a style that would later be called Luminism, for its use of pervasive light. Biography Fitz Henry Lane was born on December 19, 1804, in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Lane was christened Nathaniel Rogers Lane on March 17, 1805, and would remain known as such until he was 27. It was not until March 13, 1832, that the state of Massachusetts would officially grant Lane's own formal request (made in a letter dated December 26, 1831) to change his name from Nathaniel Rogers to Fitz Henry Lane. As with practically all aspects of Lane's life, the subject of his name is one surrounded by much confusion—it was not until 2005 that historians discovered that they had been wrongly referring to the artist as Fitz Hugh, as opposed to his chosen Fitz Henry. David Claypoole Johnston (25 March 1799 – 8 November 1865) was a 19th-century American cartoonist, printmaker, painter, and actor from Boston, Massachusetts. He was the first natively trained American to master all the various graphic arts processes of lithography, etching, metal plate engraving, and wood engraving.Tatham. 1987. Charles Hubbard (1801–1875) was an artist in Boston, Massachusetts in the 19th century. He kept a studio on Tremont Row and was affiliated with the Boston Artists' Association. George Hollingsworth

Albert Gallatin Hoit
Albert Gallatin Hoit (December 13, 1809 – December 18, 1856) was an American painter who lived in Boston, Massachusetts. Richard Saltonstall Greenough
Richard Saltonstall Greenough (April 19, 1819 – 1904) was an American sculptor and younger brother to Neoclassical sculptor Horatio Greenough. Greenough was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the youngest child of Elizabeth (Bender) and David Greenough (1774–1836). He was educated at the Boston Latin School, entering in 1829. At age 17, he followed his brother in a career in sculpture, and in 1837 left for Italy where he belonged to the second generation of American expatriate artists. Thereafter he divided his time between Europe and America, but spent most of his studio life in Rome. Greenough married Sarah Dana Loring of Boston on September 26, 1846, and had two children at Boston in 1848 and 1851. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1855. Greenough died in Rome in 1904. He is buried in the Protestant Cemetery, Rome.
