Bondage (1917 Film)
''Bondage'' is a 1917 American silent drama film written and directed by Ida May Park (based on the story by Edna Kenton), and starring Dorothy Phillips, William Stowell, Gretchen Lederer and J.B. MacLaughlin. Many sources over the years, including the authoritative Michael F. Blake book, have listed Lon Chaney as appearing in the film in an uncredited capacity, but Chaney historian Jon Mirsalis states, "There is no evidence to support that claim. The formal documents submitted to the U.S. Copyright Office do not list Chaney in the cast, nor do the cast lists submitted to trade publications such as Moving Picture World. None of the reviews of the time mention Chaney. Recent texts attribute Chaney to the role of "the seducer," but reviews of the time confirm that this part was played by J. B. McLaughlin. Ida May Park
Ida May Park (December 28, 1879 РJune 13, 1954) was an American screenwriter and film director of the silent era, in the early 20th century. She wrote for more than 50 films between 1914 and 1930, and directed 14 films between 1917 and 1920. She was born and died in Los Angeles, California. She was married to film director and producer Joseph De Grasse, with whom she was regularly teamed at Universal. Early career Park got her start in the entertainment industry as a stage actress when she was 15 years old. During her time in the theatre she met her future husband, Joseph De Grasse, also an actor. When Path̩ hired De Grasse in 1909, Park was hired as a writer. Together they were hired by Universal. Bennie Jean Porter (December 8, 1922 – January 13, 2018) was an American film and television actress. She was notable for her roles in ''The Youngest Profession'' (1943), ''Bathing Beauty'' (1944), ''Abbott and Costello in Hollywood'' (1945), '' Till the End of Time'' (1946), '' Cry Danger'' (1951), and ''The Left Hand of God'' (1955). Porter was married to Edward Dmytryk, who was one of the Hollywood Ten, the most prominent blacklisted group in the film industry during the McCarthy era. Edna Kenton (March 17, 1876 – February 28, 1954) was an American writer and literary critic. Kenton is best remembered for her 1928 work ''The Book of Earths,'' which collected various unusual and controversial theories about a hollow earth, Atlantis, and similar matters. Early life and education Edna Baldwin Kenton was born in Springfield, Missouri in 1876. Her father, James Edgar Kenton, was a bookkeeper.
