Boekenleeuw
The Boekenleeuw is a Flemish literary award for the best book in children's literature by a Flemish author. History The ''Referendumprijs voor Vlaamse kinder- en jeugdboeken'' award was established in 1962. In 1986 this award was replaced by the Boekenleeuw and the Boekenwelp awards. The award was not given in 2017 due to reorganisation at Boek.be and due to reassessment of what awards the organisation would continue to support. The award was given again in 2018 sponsored by association of authors, composers and publishers SABAM and GAU (Groep Algemene Uitgevers). Several authors have received the award multiple times, including Bart Moeyaert (six times), Anne Provoost (three times) and Diane Broeckhoven (two times). Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem and Pat van Beirs have also won the Boekenleeuw as co-authors on two separate occasions. Kathleen Vereecken
Kathleen Vereecken (born 14 December 1962) is a Belgian writer of novels, children's literature and non-fiction. She has won several awards for her work, including the Boekenleeuw (2010 and 2019) and Woutertje Pieterse Prijs (2019). Early life Vereecken was born in 1962 as one of four daughters. She worked as a journalist for various women's magazines as well as the newspaper ''De Standaard''. Career Vereecken published her first book ''Het raadsel in het fluisterbos'' in 1993, a story that she submitted to a children's literature competition. Both her books ''Alle kleuren grijs'' (1997) and ''Kleine Cecilia'' (1999) were nominated for the Gouden Uil award. Many of her books have a historic theme such as ''Lara & Rebecca'' (2006), which takes places on a nineteenth century plantation in Louisiana, and ''Ik denk dat het liefde was'' (2009) and '' Zijdeman'' (2013) which both take place in 18th century Paris. Els Beerten
Els Beerten (born 27 March 1959) is a Flemish writer of children's literature. Career Beerten made her debut in 1987 with the book ''Scènes''. In 2004, she received the Gouden Zoen award for her book ''Lopen voor je leven''. In 2009, she won the Nienke van Hichtum-prijs, the Boekenleeuw and the Gouden Boekenuil awards for her book ''Allemaal willen we de hemel'' (2008), a story that takes place during World War II. She also won the Lavki-prijs voor het Jeugdboek in 2011 and the Prijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap voor Jeugdliteratuur in 2013 for this book. Her books have been illustrated by various illustrators including Kristien Aertssen, Geert Vervaeke and Fred de Heij. Anne Provoost
Anne Provoost (born 26 July 1964) is a Flemish author who now lives in Antwerp with her husband and three children. Career Anne Provoost was born in the Belgian town of Poperinge. She grew up in a family of four children in West Flanders and went on to pursue Germanic studies at the linked universities of Kortrijk and Leuven. Although she had been writing stories since childhood, she thought nothing of it until she began to win competitions while a student. She continued her education with a one-year course in pedagogics and then, having married Manu Claeys, went to join him in Minneapolis, where he was studying American literature. Bart Moeyaert
Bart Peter Boudewijn Moeyaert (born 9 June 1964) is a Belgian writer. Early life Moeyaert was born in 1964 in Bruges as the youngest of seven brothers. He is named after the character Bartje in the book series by Anne de Vries and after Baudouin of Belgium (Boudewijn). As is tradition in Belgium, King Baudouin of Belgium is his godfather as Moeyaert is the seventh son in an unbroken succession of sons. Heide (; Holsatian: ''Heid'') is a town in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is the capital of the ''Kreis'' (district) Dithmarschen. Population: 21,000. The German word ''Heide'' means "heath". In the 15th century four adjoining villages decided to build a church in the "middle of the heath". This remained the town's name to date. The exact foundation date is now unknown, but by 1447 Heide was already the main village of Dithmarschen. At this time Dithmarschen was an independent peasant republic. Heide became a town in the 19th century. Heide has the largest un-built-upon market square in Germany, with 4.7 hectares. It is used primarily as a parking lot and has approximately 500 parking spaces. In 2016, the city staged 3 car-free Sundays on the market square for the first time.
