Bodo Otto House
The Bodo Otto House, also known as the Otto–Tonkin House, is a historic house located at the corner of County Route 551 (Kings Highway) and Quaker Road in the Mickleton section of East Greenwich Township in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. The house was built in 1766 and documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) in 1936. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1976, for its significance in military history. With History and description The house is a two and one-half story stone building featuring Georgian architecture. The land was purchased by William Scull on June 25, 1766. He sold it to Bodo Otto Jr. (1748–1782), son of Bodo Otto, on August 1, 1772. The house was burned in 1778, during the American Revolutionary War. Mickleton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located within East Greenwich Township in Gloucester County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The area is served as United States Postal Service ZIP Code 08056. As of the 2000 U.S. census, the population for ZIP Code Tabulation Area 08056 was 2,469. With major suburban housing development since then, Mickleton along with the rest of East Greenwich has experienced a major population boom. Mickleton's Quaker roots can still be seen in its "Friend's Meeting House", a Quaker church, and in the "Little Red School House", a schoolhouse building from the 17th and 18th centuries. Dr. Bodo Otto (17111787) was a Senior Surgeon of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He was one of the early settlers of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, having emigrated from the Electorate of Hanover in what is now Germany in 1755.Otto During the Revolution the Second Continental Congress appointed Otto to establish a military hospital in Trenton, New Jersey for the treatment of smallpox.
