Canadian Mixed Curling Championship
The Canadian Mixed Curling Championship is the national curling championship for mixed curling in Canada. The winners of the tournament will represent Canada at the World Mixed Curling Championship. In mixed curling, the positions on a team must alternate between men and women. If a man throws last rocks, which is usually the case, the women must throw lead rocks and third rocks, while the other male member of the team throws second rocks. In 2004, Shannon Kleibrink became the only woman to skip a team and win a Canadian Mixed championship. History The Canadian Mixed Curling Championship was established in 1964, with Canadian Breweries as the event's sponsor and Frank Sargent (sports executive), Frank Sargent as its committee chairman. Neil Harrison (curler)
Neil Gordon "Harry" Harrison (January 23, 1949 – February 24, 2014) was a Canadian curler from Newmarket, Ontario. He was a six-time provincial champion, and two-time Canadian and World champion. He is considered to be one of the best leads of all time. He is recognized as having revolutionized the position with the use of the corner guard. Biography Harrison was born in Peterborough, Ontario, on January 23, 1949 and began curling at age 12. Harrison's father Burritt was also a curler, having played lead for Ontario at the 1952 Macdonald Brier. Harrison also grew up in Peterborough. Harrison was the long time lead for the Ed Werenich rink, but he played second for Werenich when they won their first provincial championship in 1981. The team, which also consisted of Bob Widdis at third and Jim McGrath at lead would represent Ontario at the 1981 Labatt Brier, where they finished 4th, following a tie breaker loss to Saskatchewan's Bob Ellert. The Ontario Tankard is the Southern Ontario provincial championship for men's curling. The winner represents Team Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier. The tournament is overseen by CurlON (formerly the Ontario Curling Association). Totte Åkerlund
Erik "Totte" Åkerlund (6 March 1915 – 16 March 2009) was a Swedish curler. (look for "Åkerlund, Erik “Totte”") He was a and a four-time Swedish men's curling champion (1947, 1951, 1959, 1967). He was also a curling activist, in the years 1953-1970 he sat on the board of the Swedish Federation of Curling, additionally he served as treasurer (1954-1956), vice president (1963-1966) and from 1970 to 1972 president. In 1966 he was inducted into the Swedish Curling Hall of Fame. Totte was also active in the squash environment. Initially, a playing field was organized in his house (Villa Åkerlund, now the seat of the US embassy). In 1946 he was one of the founders of Stockholms Squashklubb, the first Swedish club.
