Blood Wedding (1938 Film)
''Blood Wedding'' ( Spanish: ''Bodas de sangre'') is a 1938 Argentine film written and directed by Edmundo Guibourg, the first film adaptation of Federico García Lorca's 1931 tragic play of the same name. It stars Spanish actress Margarita Xirgu—the main actress with whom Lorca had worked—alongside a cast that included mainly members of her theater company: Pedro López Lagar, Amelia de la Torre, Helena Cortesina, Eloísa Vigo, Amalia Sánchez Ariño, Enrique Diosdado, Alberto Contreras and Luisa Sala. The making of the film was intended as a tribute to Lorca, who had been assasinated in 1936. It was written in 1932 and first performed at Teatro Beatriz in Madrid in March 1933, then later that year in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús García Lorca (5 June 1898 – 19 August 1936), known as Federico García Lorca ( ), was a Spanish poet, playwright, and theatre director. A film adaptation is the transfer of a work or story, in whole or in part, to a feature film. Margarita Xirgu
Margarita Xirgu Subirá (18 June 1888, Molins de Rei, Barcelona, Spain – 25 April 1969, Montevideo, Uruguay), also Margarida Xirgu, was a Spanish stage actress, who was greatly popular throughout her country and Latin America. A friend of the poet Federico García Lorca, she was forced into exile during Francisco Franco's dictatorship of Spain, but continued her work in America. Helena Cortesina (also known as Elena Cortesina or Elena Manuela Dolores Cortés Altabas) was a Spanish film director, actor, producer, and theatrical entrepreneur.
