Blaze O' Glory
''Blaze o' Glory'' is a 1929 American musical war film directed by George Crone and Renaud Hoffman. It stars Eddie Dowling and Betty Compson. The soundtrack survives. Plot At the stand of his murder trial, defendant Eddie Williams recounts his experiences. In 1917, he had a successful Broadway stage career and marriage to Helen Williams. However, with the American entry into World War I he was sent to the Western Front and debilitated by poison gas when saving an Imperial German Army soldier. After returning home Eddie becomes unemployed, while to his chagrin Helen is able to hold a job. After finding Helen in an affair with her employer Carl Hummel, he shoots Hummel in a fit of rage. The District Attorney reveals that Helen only entered the relationship to gain the job to support Eddie, and they reconcile. Although Eddie confessed to the murder, the jury acquits him. George Crone
George Crone (1894–1966), also known as George J. Crone, was an American director and editor, whose career spanned both the silent and sound film eras. He began his career cutting the silent film '' Let's Be Fashionable'' in 1920. Between that film and his final screen credit, editing '' Arruza'' (released in 1972), he edited over 40 films, and directed over a dozen more. ''Arruza'' was released 6 years after Crone's death. Crone had worked with director Budd Boetticher, on Boetticher's obsession, a docudrama regarding his friend Carlos Arruza, the famous bullfighter. Boetticher had used ten cameras to film 2 of Arruza's bullfights in January and February 1966, and Crone was tasked with editing the different fights together. Crone died shortly after completing the tasks, in June 1966. Earlier in his career, he had been the original editor on '' Citizen Kane'', before being replaced by Robert Wise. Frankie Darro (born Frank Johnson, Jr.; December 22, 1917 – December 25, 1976) was an American actor and later in his career a stuntman. He began his career as a child actor in silent films, progressed to lead roles and co-starring roles in adventure, western, dramatic, and comedy films, and later became a character actor and voice-over artist. He is perhaps best known for his role as Lampwick, the unlucky boy who turns into a donkey in Walt Disney's second animated feature, ''Pinocchio'' (1940). In early credits, his last name was spelled Darrow. Ferdinand Schumann-Heink
Ferdinand Schumann-Heink (born 9 August 1893 – 15 September 1958) was a prolific character actor with over 65 films to his credit. Though most of his films were uncredited roles, he wrote the screenplay for the 1930 film ''Mamba''. During the First World War Ferdinand enlisted in the U.S. Army Field Artillery, serving at Camp Funston, Arizona, until he was medically discharged with weakened lungs from pneumonia. Ferdinand's brother George Washington Schumann-Heink died of illness whilst in the US Army. His brother August had returned to Germany, where he was killed in action with the Imperial German Navy when his U-boat hit a mine in the Mediterranean Sea. Personal life Heink was the son of opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink. He was married to June Osborne. Death He died in 1958 in Los Angeles, California.
