Blaengwawr (electoral Ward)
Blaengwawr was, for much of the twentieth century, an electoral ward for the purposes of electing members to Glamorgan County Council and the Aberdare Urban District Council. Blaengwawr no longer forms an electoral ward and is part of Aberaman. Gadlys first became an electoral ward in the late nineteenth century with the formation of Glamorgan County Council. Gadlys was also one of the five electoral wards of the Aberdare Urban District Council from its formation in 1894. The other wards were Aberaman, Aberdare Town, Gadlys and Llwydcoed. History 1889-1914 Blaengwawr first became an electoral ward in the late nineteenth century with the formation of Aberdare Urban District Council. Ward (politics)
A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. In some countries, wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area (e.g. William Morris Ward in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England). It is common in the United States for wards to simply be numbered. Origins The word “ward”, for an electoral subdivision, appears to have originated in the Wards of the City of London, where gatherings for each ward known as “wardmotes” have taken place since the 12th century. The word was much later applied to divisions of other cities and towns in England and Wales and Ireland. 1907 Glamorgan County Council Election
The 1907 Glamorgan County Council election was the seventh contest for seats on this local authority in south Wales. It was preceded by the 1904 election and followed by the 1910 election. Overview of the result As in most parts of Wales, the Liberal Party again won a majority of the seats. The Conservatives made a slight advance, notably in the western part of the county where they also held on in a number of industrial wards where the influence of paternalism remained strong. A more striking factor was the advance of Labour candidates in several areas and there were also Liberal members who were returned under a 'progressive' banner with support from the labour movement. John William Evans (Welsh Liberal Politician)
John William Evans (1870-1906) was a Liberal politician and public figure in Aberdare, South Wales. Evans was born in Hirwaun in 1870. His father Evan J. Evans, was a prosperous business man in Hirwaun, and a deacon at Tabernacle Congregational Chapel, and one of the founders of the church. He was educated locally and at St. Andrew's College, Swansea, and the Independent College, Taunton. He entered the legal profession, and was articled to Mr. Coe, of Cardiff, before setting up a successful practice at Aberdare. He was married with one son. Public life When only 21 years of age, Evans was selected a member of the Merthyr Board of Guardians. It was said that he was at the time the youngest guardian in the United Kingdom. Rees Llewellyn
Rees Llewellyn (20 June 1851 – 21 August 1919) was an industrialist and public figure in Aberdare, South Wales and a prominent figure in the industrial history of the South Wales Coalfield. He was the son of David Llewellyn, Parc Isaf, Treorchy, and was born at Cwmpark House, within 50 yards, near to the Ocean Colliery at that place. He was educated at the National School, Pentre, and afterwards at the Grammar School, Bridgend. In 1866, he was articled as surveyor to Leyshon Rees of Hirwaun and three years later he became a surveyor at the Ocean Colliery, Cwmpark. By 1877 he was manager of the Bwllfa and Merthyr Dare Collieries. In 1891 the Bwllfa Company was formed, with Llewellyn as Director and Resident Colliery Agent. In 1897 he was President of the Colliery Managers Association and in 1899, a member of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Coal Owners Association. The 1904 Glamorgan County Council election was the sixth contest for seats on this authority in south Wales. It was preceded by the 1901 election and followed by the 1907 election. Glamorgan was by far the largest county in Wales in terms of population. Glamorgan County Council, 1889-1974
Glamorgan County Council was established in 1889 together with the administrative county of Glamorganshire under the Local Government Act 1888. The first elections to the council were held in January 1889. The council was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974. It was replaced by Mid Glamorgan County Council, South Glamorgan County Council and West Glamorgan County Council.
