Blacktown Ice Rink
The Blacktown international Ice Arena (also known simply as Blacktown Ice Arena) was an ice sports and public skate centre, built in May 1979 the rink was located in Blacktown, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The rink closed on 28 October 2007 and was demolished over the course of 2007 and 2008. It had previously served as the home ice rink of the Sydney Ice Dogs in the Australian Ice Hockey League between 2002 and 2007. History Tom Breur opened the Blacktown International Ice Arena in Sydney's Western Suburbs in May 1979. Blacktown was Sydney's first ever suburban ice skating rink. The first organised ice hockey at the rink was with the re-located Glebe Lions when they played an all-star Sydney team. The Glebe Lions only stayed at the rink a few months before they were kicked out by Tom Breur for a minor incident. Sydney Ice Dogs
The Sydney Ice Dogs (formally ''Western Sydney Ice Dogs'') is an Australian semi-professional ice hockey team from Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 2002, the Ice Dogs are a member of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). The Ice Dogs are two time Goodall Cup champions. History Foundation blocks Top level ice hockey in Western Sydney dates back to 1981. The Blacktown Flyers were a foundation member of the New South Wales Superleague (NSWSL), playing out of Blacktown Ice Arena. Following the closure of the Warringah Ice Skating Rink in the '90s, NSWSL powerhouse, Warringah Bombers relocated to Blacktown. Blacktown in-turn withdrew support for the Flyers and a semi-private owned team, the Blacktown Bullets, were founded and joined the league in place of the Flyers. 2002 AIHL Season
The 2002 AIHL season was the third season of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). The Sydney Bears completed the double by winning the league premiership by finishing top of the league standings and claiming the Goodall Cup after defeating Adelaide Avalanche in the AIHL final. The Adelaide Avalanche was a semi-professional ice hockey club based in the Adelaide suburb of Thebarton, South Australia. The Avalanche, founded in 1999, was a founding member of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). The team’s home venue was the Snowdome Adelaide (now known as IceArenA).
