A blackhead is a blocked sweat/sebaceous duct of the skin known medically as an open comedo. Blackhead
A comedo is a clogged hair follicle (pore) in the skin. Keratin (skin debris) combines with oil to block the follicle. A comedo can be open (blackhead) or closed by skin (whitehead) and occur with or without acne. The word "comedo" comes from the Latin ''comedere'', meaning "to eat up", and was historically used to describe parasitic worms; in modern medical terminology, it is used to suggest the worm-like appearance of the expressed material. The chronic inflammatory condition that usually includes comedones, inflamed papules, and pustules ( pimples) is called acne. Infection causes inflammation and the development of pus. Whether a skin condition classifies as acne depends on the number of comedones and infection. Comedones should not be confused with sebaceous filaments. Blackhead, Hawke's Bay
Blackhead is a small coastal settlement in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. It is located on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, about 74 kilometres south of Napier. Blackhead Beach is a sandy beach, similar to other Hawke's Bay beaches such as Shoal Beach. The original Māori name for the beach is Te Pariomahu and this is more commonly used by local hapū. There is a marine reserve located offshore from Blackhead Beach. Activities such as swimming, diving, sun bathing, surfing and other recreational water activities are popular at Blackhead. Commercial water operations such as fishing are not very common at Blackhead due to the nearby marine reserve forbidding harm to the marine wildlife. Fishing outside of the reserve is common. Small Point-Adam's Cove-Blackhead-Broad Cove is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, located in the Trinity-Conception Bay District north of Carbonear. The town was incorporated in 1968 by amalgamating the independent fishing villages of Small Point, Adam's Cove, Blackhead and Broad Cove. The neighbouring community of Kingston was originally part of the amalgamation, but withdrew in 1976. The town had a population of 414 in the Canada 2021 Census. Blackhead Mountains
The Blackhead Mountains range is located near the northern end of the Catskill Mountains, in Greene County, New York, United States, where it divides the towns of Windham and Jewett. The three named peaks in the range — Thomas Cole Mountain (3,940 feet; 1,201 m), Black Dome (3,980 feet; 1,213 m), and Blackhead Mountain (also in the 3,940-foot range) — are the fourth-, third-, and fifth-highest peaks in the Catskills, respectively. The gap between Thomas Cole and Black Dome is, at 3,700 feet, the highest in the Catskills. To the west of Thomas Cole are two lesser, officially unnamed summits known locally as Camel's Hump (3,520 feet; 1,073 m) and Caudal (3,320 feet; 1,012 m). Blackhead is a mountain located in Greene County, New York. The mountain is part of the Blackhead range of the Catskill Mountains. Blackhead is flanked to the northeast by Black Dome and Acra Point is located north. Blackhead stands within the watershed of the Hudson River, which drains into New York Bay. The southwest side of Blackhead drains into East Kill, thence into Schoharie Creek, the Mohawk River, and the Hudson River. The north side of Blackhead drains into the headwaters of Batavia Kill, and thence into Schoharie Creek. The east side of Blackhead drains into Trout Brook, thence into Shingle Kill, Catskill Creek, and the Hudson River. Blackhead is within New York's Catskill Park. Blackhead Point (), also known as Tai Pau Mai () indigenously, or by the names Tsim Sha Tsui Point and Signal Hill (), was a cape before any land reclamation took place in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. It currently remains a small hill near the coast. Signal Hill is about high and measures approximately from east to west, and from north to south. It is the site of Signal Hill Garden and features the Signal Hill Tower as well as remains of military structures. Histomoniasis is a commercially significant disease of poultry, particularly of chickens and turkeys, due to parasitic infection of a protozoan, '' Histomonas meleagridis''. The protozoan is transmitted to the bird by the nematode parasite ''Heterakis gallinarum''. ''H. meleagridis'' resides within the eggs of ''H. gallinarum'', so birds ingest the parasites along with contaminated soil or food. Earthworms can also act as a paratenic host. ''Histomonas meleagridis'' specifically infects the cecum and liver. Symptoms of the infection include lethargy, reduced appetite, poor growth, increased thirst, sulphur-yellow diarrhoea and dry, ruffled feathers. The head may become cyanotic (bluish in colour), hence the common name of the disease, blackhead disease; thus the name 'blackhead' is in all possibility a misnomer for discoloration.
