BlackPlanet
BlackPlanet is an African-American social networking service for matchmaking and job postings; it also has forums for discussion on political and social issues. BlackPlanet was launched on September 1, 2001 by Omar Wasow, an Internet analyst, who in 2001 was running "New York Online", a pre-web community he started in 1993 from his living room in Brooklyn. It was the brainchild of Wasow and Community Connect's CEO Benjamin Sun. Launched in 1999, it was a relative latecomer to social media sites, with three already in existence targeting people of color. Benjamin Sun would also launch AsianAve and MiGente.com. Company The website is run by Community Connect of New York City. AsianAve
AsianAve or Asian Avenue was a social networking service that focused on Asian Americans. The platform was shut down and the URL now redirects to its sister site, BlackPlanet. History Originally named AsianAvenue (or Asian Avenue), the site was launched on July 21, 1997 by co-founders Benjamin Sun, Peter Chen, Grace Chang, Michael Montero, and Calvin Wong. By 1998, ''The New York Times'' described it as "unusually successful" despite being "run out of an apartment", having hit five million page views from 50,000 users. Members were politically active, protesting an MSNBC headline for the 1998 Winter Olympics reading "American beats out Kwan", referring to U.S. Olympic teammates Tara Lipinski and Michelle Kwan. MiGente
MiGente.com was an online social-networking site specifically targeting the Hispanic community. It was launched in 2000. Its former parent company, Community Connect Inc., claimed that MiGente.com was the fastest growing English language site for the Hispanic community with over 3 million registered members. Members come from a variety of Hispanic backgrounds. In February 2007, the site partnered with Si TV to launch new channels on the site. The collaboration identified and promoted emerging music artists via Si TV's monthly sweepstakes. MiGente.com was owned by Community Connect Inc. until April 2008, when the Radio One paid $38 million for New York-based Community Connect, which operated a number of branded Web sites, including BlackPlanet, MiGente and AsianAvenue. Omar Wasow
Omar Tomas Wasow (born December 22, 1970) is an assistant professor in UC Berkeley’s Department of Political Science. He is co-founder of the social networking website BlackPlanet. Life Wasow grew up in a multi-ethnic family. His father, Bernard, is of German Jewish heritage, and his mother, Eileen, is African-American. Bernard was a civil rights activist who participated in the Freedom Summer Project, which entailed registering Black voters in Mississippi. Wasow's paternal grandfather was the mathematician Wolfgang R. Wasow. Both Wolfgang Wasow and Omar Wasow's paternal grandmother are of German Jewish heritage. Education Wasow is a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in New York City, where he was president of the student union. He then graduated from Stanford University in California with a BA degree in race and ethnic relations. Yahoo! GeoCities was a web hosting service that allowed users to create and publish websites for free and to browse user-created websites by their theme or interest. GeoCities was started in November 1994 by David Bohnett and John Rezner, and was named Beverly Hills Internet briefly before being renamed GeoCities. On January 28, 1999, it was acquired by Yahoo!, at which time it was supposedly the third-most visited website on the World Wide Web. In its original form, site users selected a "city" in which to list the hyperlinks to their web pages. The "cities" were named after real cities or regions according to their content – for example, computer-related sites were placed in "SiliconValley" and those dealing with entertainment were assigned to "Hollywood"; hence the name of the site. DonorsChoose is a United States-based nonprofit organization that allows individuals to donate directly to public school classroom projects. The organization has been given Charity Navigator's highest rating every year since 2005. In January 2018, they announced that 1 million projects had been funded. In 80% of public schools in the United States, at least one project has been requested on DonorsChoose. Schools from wealthy areas are more likely to make technology requests, while schools from less affluent areas are more likely to request basic supplies.
