The Diocese of Mannar ( la, Dioecesis Mannarensis) is a Roman Catholic diocese for north-western Sri Lanka, administered by the Bishop of Mannar, currently Fidelis Fernando. History The Diocese of Mannar was created on 24 January 1981 from parts of the Diocese of Jaffna. The Diocese of Jaffna ( la, Dioecesis Jaffnensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in northern Sri Lanka. Latin Catholicism in the diocese's territory date to the time of St. Francis Xavier. The current bishop is Justin Gnanapragasam. History The Apostolic Vicariate of Jaffna was created on 17 February 1845 from the Diocese of Ceylon. On 1 September 1886 it was promoted to a diocese. On 25 August 1893 parts of diocese were transferred to newly created Diocese of Trincomalee. Bishop Rayappu Joseph ( ta, இராயப்பு யோசப்; 16 April 1940 – 1 April 2021) was a Sri Lanka Tamil prelate and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Mannar. Early life and family Joseph was born on 16 April 1940 on the island of Neduntheevu in northern Ceylon to a practitioner of indigenous medicine Living in Cheddikulam and Mannar during his early childhood, he was educated at St. Patrick's College, Jaffna. Joseph has a Doctor of Canon Law degree from the Pontifical Urbaniana University. Career Joseph was ordained as a priest in December 1967. He was a professor at the St Xavier's Seminary, Jaffna. Right Reverend Emmanuel Thomas Savundaranayagam ( ta, இம்மானுவேல் தோமசு சௌந்தரநாயகம், si, තෝමස් සවුන්ද්රනායගම්; born 13 July 1938) is a Sri Lankan Tamil priest and former Roman Catholic Bishop of Jaffna. Early life and family Savundaranayagam was born on 13 July 1938 in Kayts on the island of Velanaitivu in northern Ceylon. He was educated at St. Anthony's College, Kayts and St. Patrick's College, Jaffna. He then studied at St. Martin's Seminary, Jaffna and National Seminary, Ampitiya (1957–64). Mannar Catholic Martyrs (1544)
In 1544, during the Crisis of the Sixteenth Century (1521–1597) in the Jaffna Kingdom, Cankili I killed 600 Catholic converts. Portuguese missionaries attributed the baptism, martyrdom and intercession of the Mannar Martyrs for the rapid conversion and growth of Catholicism in Sri Lanka. In a letter found in the Archives of the Society of Jesus (S.J.) dated 19 December 1561, Anrique Anriquez the first Mannar parish priest (1561–1564) gives details to how rapidly the island was converted, and churches and hospital built all around the island. The Christians of the island of Mannar were held up as a model. He wrote since their arrival, over a thousand people converted to Christianity. Right Reverend Dr. Joseph Kingsley Swampillai (born 9 December 1936) is a Sri Lankan Tamil priest and former Roman Catholic Bishop of Trincomalee. Early life and family Swampillai was born on 9 December 1936 in Kayts on the island of Velanaitivu in northern Ceylon. He was educated at St. Patrick's College, Jaffna. Career Swampillai was ordained as a priest in December 1961.Even as priest he was chosen to act as a Secretary to Apostolic Nunciature for a period. In addition to his duties as a general secretary and Chancellor to the former Bishop of Jaffna, he was also the General Manager of Catholic Schools in the Diocses of Jaffna from 1975 to 1983. The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the pope in Rome.
