Birds of Tokyo are an Australian alternative rock band from Perth, Western Australia. Their debut album, ''Day One,'' gained them domestic success, reaching number three on the AIR Independent Album charts and spending a total of 36 consecutive weeks in the top ten. In 2008, the band released '' Universes'', which made it to number three on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart. 2010 saw the band's self-titled third studio release ''Birds of Tokyo'' spend over eight months on the Australian top 20, peaking at number two on the ARIA Albums Chart. The double platinum album received the 2010 ARIA Award for Best Rock Album and in early 2011 the band's breakthrough hit "Plans" ranked number four on Triple J's Hottest 100. The album's follow-up single, " Wild at Heart", reached number one on the country's national airplay chart and won the band an APRA Award. ''Birds of Tokyo'' is the third album by Australian alternative rock band Birds of Tokyo, released on 23 July 2010 through EMI Records. It was recorded in Sydney, Australia; New York City; London; and Gothenburg, Sweden, produced by Scott Horscroft, co-produced by Adam Spark and mixed by Michael Brauer. This is the last album to feature Anthony Jackson on bass guitar before his departure in March 2011. At the J Awards of 2010, the album was nominated for Australian Album of the Year. The album won the ARIA Award for Best Rock Album in 2010. History In early 2010 the band returned to the studio to commence work on their third album. March 2010 saw the release of " The Saddest Thing I Know" and the announcement of an Australian tour by the same name, supported by New Zealand-based band Midnight Youth. ''Birds of Tokyo'' is the debut four-track extended play from Australian alternative rockers, Birds of Tokyo, which was released in January 2005 on independent label, Egg Records, through MGM Distribution. Background In 2004 Adam Spark, a Perth guitarist, approached local hard rockers, Karnivool's lead singer, Ian Kenny, to provide vocals for some demos he wanted to record for publication rights. They decided to start a side project, Birds of Tokyo, to record the material and recruited Anthony Jackson on bass guitar and Adam Weston on drums from fellow Perth group, Tragic Delicate.
