Biləsuvar (city)
Bilasuvar ( az, Biləsuvar) is a city in and the capital of the Bilasuvar District of Azerbaijan. The area's considerable agricultural potential depends on irrigation. It is situated near one of the country's four border crossings with Iran. It has been said that the city's name was called "Pileh-Swar", which meant ‘Elephant-riding Person’ in Persian language, a reference to an early emir. In Azerbaijani the name means ‘Pure Waterfalls‘. The city is located in the Central Aran region. Azerbaijan is administratively divided into 66 districts () and 11 cities () that are subordinate to the Republic. Out of these, 7 districts and 1 city is located within the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The districts are further divided into municipalities (). Aran Economic Region
Aran Economic Region ( az, Aran iqtisadi rayonu) was one of the 10 economic regions of Azerbaijan. It bordered Iran to the south, as well as the economic regions of Upper Karabakh, Ganja-Gazakh, Shaki-Zagatala, Mountainous Shirvan, Absheron, and Lankaran. Bilasuvar District
Bilasuvar District ( az, Biləsuvar rayonu) is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the south-east of the country and belongs to the Shirvan-Salyan Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Imishli, Saatly, Sabirabad, Salyan, Neftchala, Jalilabad, and Ardabil Province of Iran. Its capital and largest city is Bilasuvar. As of 2020, the district had a population of 105,100. Etymology The district's name is derived from the city Bilasuvar. "Bile" is derived from the Turkish word “bilya” which means lowland, while "suvar" means a "cavalryman". According to Azerbaijani sources, 10 thousand cavalrymen were deployed in these lowlands during the reign of Sassanid shah Khosrov. Geography Total area of the district equals 1358 km2. Turkmanchay Treaty
The Treaty of Turkmenchay ( fa, عهدنامه ترکمنچای; russian: Туркманчайский договор) was an agreement between Qajar Iran and the Russian Empire, which concluded the Russo-Persian War (1826–28). It was second of the series of treaties (the first was the 1813 Treaty of Gulistan and the last, the 1881 Treaty of Akhal) signed between Qajar Iran and Imperial Russia that forced Persia to cede or recognize Russian influence over the territories that formerly were part of Iran. The treaty was signed on 21 February 1828 (5 Sha'ban 1243) in Torkamanchay (a village between Tabriz and Tehran). It made Persia cede the control of several areas in the South Caucasus to Russia: the Erivan Khanate, the Nakhchivan Khanate and the remainder of the Talysh Khanate. Bileh Savar ( fa, بيله سوار, also Romanized as Bilesuvar) is the capital city of Bileh Savar County in Ardabil Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 14,027, in 3,251 families. The city is the site of a border crossing with Republic of Azerbaijan.
