Billy Little (rugby League, Born 1911)
William Little (26 January 1911 – 17 December 2004) was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s. He played at representative level for England and Cumberland, and at club level for Barrow, as a , i.e. number 7. Background Little was born in the small mining village of Great Clifton, Cumberland, and in his early days he played for the village's club, and he died aged 93 in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Playing career International honours Little won caps for England while at Barrow in 1933 against Other Nationalities, and in 1934 against Australia, and France. County honours Little represented Cumberland. Great Clifton
Great Clifton is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Allerdale in the English county of Cumbria. In the 2001 census, it has a population of 1,101, increasing slightly to 1,114 at the 2011 Census. Location Workington is west of the village and Cockermouth is east. The River Derwent is roughly north of Great Clifton. Features The village has a post office, general store and three pubs. The village school, Derwent Vale Primary School, was built in 1995. Its predecessor was in a building opposite the old pit, now a private residence. There are several wind farms nearby, one being the Winscales Moor Wind Farm whose Community Fund has contributed money to the local village hall. Wigan ( ) is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas, Lancashire, River Douglas. Central Park (Wigan)
Central Park was a rugby league stadium in Wigan, England, which was the home of Wigan RLFC before the club moved to the JJB Stadium in 1999. Its final capacity was 18,000. The site is now a Tesco supermarket. History On 6 September 1902, Wigan played at Central Park for the first time in the opening match of the newly formed First Division. An estimated crowd of 9,000 spectators saw Wigan beat Batley 14–8. Historically, English rugby league clubs competed for the Lancashire Cup and the Yorkshire Cup, known collectively as the county cups. The leading rugby clubs in Yorkshire had played in a cup competition (affectionately known as ''t’owd tin pot'') for several years prior to the schism of 1895. However, the Lancashire authorities had refused to sanction a similar tournament, fearing it would lead to professionalism. After the split, the replacement for the Yorkshire Cup was not immediately introduced; however, new Yorkshire and Lancashire Cups were introduced in the 1905–06 season.
