Billy Bates (footballer)
William Henry Bates (13 January 1922 — August 1997) was an English footballer who played as a winger. Career Bates began his career playing for local clubs Eaton Bray and Waterlows, before signing for Luton Town. Bates made one first team appearance for Luton, playing in a 2–0 defeat against Millwall on 7 October 1946. After a spell at Chelmsford City, Bates joined Watford in time for the 1948–49 Football League The 1948– 49 season was the 50th completed season of The Football League. Eaton Bray
Eaton Bray is a village and civil parish in Bedfordshire, England. It is situated about three miles south-west of the town of Dunstable and is part of a semi-rural area which extends into the parish of Edlesborough. In the 2011 United Kingdom census the population of the parish was recorded as 2,585. Toponym The toponym ''Eaton'' is common in England, being derived from the Old English ', meaning "farm by a river". Descent of the manor The Domesday Book of 1086 lists the manor as ''Eitone'', one of the numerous holdings throughout England of Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and Earl of Kent, uterine brother of King William the Conqueror. Millwall is a district on the western and southern side of the Isle of Dogs, in east London, England, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. 1948–49 Football League
The 1948– 49 season was the 50th completed season of The Football League. Final league tables Beginning with the season 1894–95, clubs finishing level on points were separated according to goal average (goals scored divided by goals conceded), or more properly put, goal ratio. In case one or more teams had the same goal difference, this system favoured those teams who had scored fewer goals. The goal average system was eventually scrapped beginning with the 1976–77 season. Luton
Luton () is a town and unitary authority with borough status, in Bedfordshire, England. At the 2011 census, the Luton built-up area subdivision had a population of 211,228 and its built-up area, including the adjacent towns of Dunstable and Houghton Regis, had a population of 258,018. It is the most populous town in the county, from the County Towns of Hertford, from Bedford and from London. The town is situated on the River Lea, about north-north-west of London. The town's foundation dates to the sixth century as a Saxon outpost on the River Lea, from which Luton derives its name. Dunstable ( ) is a market town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in Bedfordshire, England, east of the Chiltern Hills, north of London. There are several steep chalk escarpments, most noticeable when approaching Dunstable from the north. Dunstable is the fourth largest town in Bedfordshire and along with Houghton Regis forms the westernmost part of the Luton/Dunstable Urban Area. Etymology In Ancient Rome, Roman times there was a minor settlement called Durocobrivis in the area now occupied by modern-day Dunstable.
