Bill Byrne (footballer, Born 1931)
Cyril William Byrne (15 May 1931 – 4 September 2020) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Byrne played with North Launceston from 1951 to 1953, winning their best and fairest in 1952. He was recruited to Captain / Coach Corowa in 1954 and 1955. Byrne was then Captain / Coach of Mangoplah - Cookardinia from 1956 to 1959, for two premierships in 1956 and 1957. In Rd.1 of 1957, Byrne played his one and only game with the Melbourne Football Club, then returned to Mangoplah. Corowa Football Club
The Corowa Football Club, nicknamed the Spiders, was an Australian rules football club based in Corowa, New South Wales, that competed in the Ovens & Murray Football League. The club merged with the Wahgunyah Football Club on several occasions during its early history and as a result was also known as the Border United Football Club from time to time between 1877 and 1947. Then in 1979, both Corowa Football Club and Rutherglen Football Club merged to form Corowa Rutherglen Football Club and have played in the Ovens and Murray Football League ever since. Club history The Corowa Football club was established by a gentleman called Jacob Levin in 1877. Mangoplah
Mangoplah is a town approximately south of Wagga Wagga in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. At the 2016 census, Mangoplah had a population of 309. The name of the town is believed to mean "Kooris singing" in the Wiradjuri aboriginal language. History The first bridge in Mangoplah was built in 1862 from funding of £700 by the NSW Government over Phillitop & Old Man Creek. In 1865, A parcel of Crown land in Mangoplah was allocated for public purposes to the Wesleyan Church. In 1866, Thomas Jones was the Licensee of the Mangoplah Inn and was sold to Mrs Ann Hyland in 1868. Around 1880, the Mangoplah Inn, became known as Richard Curry's Mangoplah Inn. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. South West Football League (New South Wales)
The South West District Football League was a major Australian rules football competition which ran from 1910 until 1981 in the Riverina region of New South Wales. History The first recorded Australian Rules Football match in the Riverina area was on the 1st August, 1881 between Wagga Wagga and the more experienced Albury team and was played in Wagga. The South West District Football Association (SWDFL) was formed in 1913, when it superseded the Ganmain Football Association, which was formed in 1910, with all clubs moving into play in the SWDFL competition. In 1924 a South Western District Football League team played Collingwood Football Club at Narrandera with Collingwood winning, 86 to SWDFL 76. In May, 1930 the SWDFL competition was abandoned, after Whitton withdrew earlier at the AGM, then both Ganmain and Matong club withdrew due to a lack of players.
