Bill Butler (linebacker)
William Marshall Butler (born August 4, 1947) is a former American football linebacker. Butler was born in Los Angeles in 1947. He played college football at Los Angeles Pierce College, Pierce College (1966-1967) and Valley State Matadors football, Valley State College (1968-1969), both located in the San Fernando Valley. He was a Junior College All-American at Pierce and won All California Collegiate Association honors in 1969. In February 1970, Butler signed a professional football contract with the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). He appeared in a total of 14 NFL games for the Broncos. Linebacker
Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. They are the "middle ground" of defenders, playing closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary), but farther back than the defensive linemen. As such, linebackers play a hybrid role and are often the most versatile players on the defensive side of the ball; they can be asked to play roles similar to either a defensive lineman (such as stopping the runner on a running play) or a defensive back (such as dropping back into pass coverage).
