''Big Bang Theory'' is an album by violinist Billy Bang. It was recorded on August 20 and 21, 1999, at Sound on Sound Studios in New York City, and was released in 2000 by Justin Time Records. On the album, Bang is joined by pianist Alexis T. Pope, double bassist Curtis Lundy, and drummer Codaryl Moffett. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Al Campbell stated that the musicians are "easily capable of improvisation while maintaining a cohesive balance," and noted the album's "overt statement of spirituality that borders on experimentation while maintaining conventional structures." Billy Bang (September 20, 1947 – April 11, 2011), born William Vincent Walker, was an American free jazz violinist and composer. Sound on Sound Studios, formerly known as MSR Studios (Manhattan Sound Recordings) is a photography and movie producing company recording facility in Montclair, New Jersey. Its forebear, MSR Studios, was located in Manhattan, just outside Times Square at 168 West 48th Street, between 6th and 7th avenues. Originating from the merger of ''Sound on Sound'' and Right Track Recording, the studio was first known as Legacy Studios. Closure and reopening MSR Studios ceased operations at its Midtown location in June 2016. Noise levels from the construction of a nearby hotel made recording difficult. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. ''Commandment (For the Sculpture of Alain Kirili)'' is a live solo album by violinist Billy Bang. It was recorded on March 30, 1997, at the loft of sculptor Alain Kirili and photographer Ariane Lopez-Huici in New York City, and was released later that year by No More Records. Kirili and Lopez-Huici began sponsoring programs of free jazz in their loft during the 1980s, and went on to present seven or eight concerts a year. Other than Bang, guest musicians included Steve Lacy, Cecil Taylor, Roscoe Mitchell, Archie Shepp, Sunny Murray, and Roswell Rudd. On the album, which was conceived as a dialogue between Bang and Kirili, the violinist can be heard responding to aspects of Kirili's sculptures as he walked among them. ''All About Jazz'' is a website established by Michael Ricci in 1995. A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz. Ricci maintains a related site, ''Jazz Near You'', about local concerts and events. The Jazz Journalists Association voted ''All About Jazz'' Best Website Covering Jazz for thirteen consecutive years between 2003 and 2015, when the category was retired. Kahil El'Zabar
Kahil El'Zabar (born Clifton Blackburn; November 11, 1953) is an American jazz multi-instrumentalist (mainly a Percussion instrument, percussionist) and composer. He regularly records for Delmark Records. Life and work El'Zabar was born in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Lake Forest College and joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the early 1970s, and became its chairman in 1975. During the 1970s, he formed the musical groups Ritual Trio and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, both of which remain active. Musicians with whom Kahil EL'Zabar has collaborated include Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Simon, Pharoah Sanders, and Billy Bang. In 2017 the film "Be Known - The Mystery of Kahil El Zabar" by filmmaker Dwayne Johnson-Cochran was released. The documentary follows El' Zabar and band on their 2007 Black History Month tour.
