Biathlon At The Winter Paralympics
Biathlon has been contested at the Winter Paralympic Games since the Winter Games in 1988, in Innsbruck, Austria. Summary In the winter Paralympics where the sport was introduced, only athletes with physical impairments were allowed to compete. In the following Winter Paralympics in 1992, competitors expanded to include those with visual impairments. Biathlon at the 1988 Winter Olympics consisted of three biathlon events. They were held at the Canmore Nordic Centre, about 100 kilometres from the host city of Calgary. The events began on 20 February and ended on 26 February 1988. Medal summary Four nations won medals in biathlon, East Germany leading the medal table with two gold medals, and the Soviet Union winning the most medals with 4 (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze). Frank-Peter Roetsch won both individual gold medals, while Valeriy Medvedtsev won three medals, two silvers in the individual events and gold in the relay. Wolfgang Pickl is an Austrian Paralympic athlete. He represented Austria at seven editions of the Paralympics: the 1980 Summer Paralympics and the Winter Paralympics of 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1994. He competed in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon and track and field events. In total he won one silver medal and three bronze medals at the Paralympics. Jouko Grip
Jouko Grip (born January 10, 1949, in Pälkäne) is a Paralympic athlete who has won medals in both the Summer and Winter Games. Most of his medals were in Nordic skiing. He is Finnish and has polio in his left hand. In 2006 he was inducted into the Paralympic Hall of Fame. He competed at the Summer Paralympics twice, in 1984 and 1988, and participated in track and field athletics both times, winning two gold medals in the 400 and 1500 metre races in 1984. He competed in seven consecutive Winter Paralympics, from 1980 to 2002, and won a total of ten gold and five silver medals. Svein Lilleberg (born 12 November 1958) is a Norwegian cross-country skier. He contracted polio early, when he was only six months old. To begin with, he was totally paralysed, later regaining most movement, but he has never had use of one foot. He competes in the LW2. Svein has three sisters, and is married and has four children. They live in Heimdal, Trondheim, near his training base in Granåsen. He was born in Gåslanddalen, Hølonda and is a member of Leik IL. Biathlon
The biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.
