Biathlon At The 2002 Winter Olympics – Men's Individual
The Men's 20 kilometre individual biathlon competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics was held on 11 February, at Soldier Hollow. Competitors raced over five loops of a 4.0 kilometre skiing course, shooting four times, twice prone and twice standing. Each miss resulted in one minute being added to a competitor's skiing time. Results Raphaël Poirée was defending overall World Cup champion, while Sergei Rozhkov was the defending World Cup champion in the individual race. Paavo Puurunen had won the most recent world championships, and Halvard Hanevold had won the 1998 Winter Olympics, 1998 Olympic title. Ole Einar Bjørndalen, who had finished just behind Poirée in the overall world cup, had dominated the test event in 2001, winning all three races, including the individual, beating Sven Fischer. Soldier Hollow
Soldier Hollow is a cross-country ski venue located at the mouth of a Soldier Hollow (Utah), hollow of the same name about southeast of Salt Lake City in Wasatch Mountain State Park in northwestern Wasatch County, Utah, Wasatch County, Utah, United States. The venue was created for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and during the games it hosted the Biathlon at the 2002 Winter Olympics, biathlon, Cross-country skiing at the 2002 Winter Olympics, cross-country skiing, and the cross country skiing portion of the Nordic combined at the 2002 Winter Olympics, Nordic combined events. Frode Andresen
Frode Andresen (born 9 September 1973) is a former Norwegian biathlete and cross-country skier. Early life Andresen was born in the Netherlands, and lived one year each in Cape Town, South Africa; Lagos, Nigeria; and Nairobi, Kenya, because of his parents' careers. They settled in Norway when Frode was four, and a year later he learnt to cross-country ski, taking up biathlon when he was twelve. Biathlon career Andresen started competing in 1985 and has 15 World cup victories. In all Andresen had 47 podium finishes, 15 1st (including three wins at the Holmenkollen ski festival biathlon competition with two sprint wins (2000, 2001) and one pursuit (2001)), 15 2nd and 17 3rd places. Vyacheslav Derkach
Vyacheslav Derkach (born 23 June 1976) is a former Ukrainian biathlete. Career Derkach competed in the 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics for Ukraine. His best performance was 7th, as part of the 2002 Ukrainian relay team. His best individual performance was 23rd, in the 2002 individual. In 1998, he finished 50th in the individual and 18th as part of the relay team. In 2002, he finished 36th in the sprint and 40th in the relay. In 2006, he finished 72nd in the sprint. In 2010, he finished 77th in the sprint and 8th as part of the relay team. His best performance at the Biathlon World Championships, is 5th, as part of the 2009 Ukrainian men's relay team. His best individual performance is 16th, in the 2008 sprint. Derkach has earned four Biathlon World Cup podium finishes. Christoph Sumann
Christoph "Sumi" Sumann (19 January 1976) is a former Austrian biathlete. Life and career As was the case with many of his fellow biathletes, Sumann switched over from cross-country skiing, which he had been doing since childhood. By the mid-1990s had he entered junior ski team of Austria and later on progressed to senior level. He was a skillful sprinter at the time. Sumann began as a biathlete in 2000 and would compete in biathlon at the top level for 11 seasons. His first World Cup win came in 2002–03 season and he finished 15th in the World Cup total. In 2006–07 Biathlon World Cup Sumann won the a mass start race and wore the red bib of the leader of the mass start cup up until the last stage of the season, the fact is quite outstanding for Austrians in biathlon despite the fact that he eventually lost it to Ole Einar Bjørndalen, who thus won the mass start world cup that season. René Cattarinussi
René Cattarinussi (born 12 April 1972) is a former Italian biathlete. He won a bronze medal in the sprint at the 1996 World Championships in Ruhpolding. The following year, at the 1997 World Championships in Brezno-Osrblie, he conquered a silver medal in the sprint event and a bronze in the relay. He also won a bronze and a silver medal in the sprint distance at the 2000 World Championships in Oslo and at the 2001 World Championships in Pokljuka. Egil Gjelland
Egil Gjelland (born 12 November 1973) is a former Norwegian biathlete. He is olympic champion in the biathlon relay from the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Egil Gjelland grew up in Voss, the home of many world class biathletes, and started doing biathlon at the age of 15. He first entered the national team in 1996. Gjelland's strength is in shooting. His greatest triumphs have come on Norway's relay team, where he was a regular feature for several years, thanks to his ability to keep his cool and deliver faultless shooting. In the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, he won the gold medal on the relay, together with Ole Einar Bjørndalen, Halvard Hanevold and Frode Andresen. In the Biathlon World Championship 2005 in Hochfilzen, Gjelland again helped win the relay, Norway's first relay-gold in the world championships for 38 years. Jeremy Scott Teela (born 27 October 1976) is a former American biathlete and a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. Life and career Teela is a three-time Olympian, having competed in the 2002, 2006, and 2010 Winter Olympics. Teela retired from the sport at the end of the 2013–14 season.
