Bhekisisa Centre For Health Journalism
The Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism is a nonprofit media group based in South Africa. Bhekisisa, which means “to scrutinise” in isiZulu, covers health from a social justice perspective, often using a narrative, solutions journalism approach. It is a recognised authority on healthcare in South Africa and the African continent, and is widely referenced in local and international media, academic journals and books. Bhekisisa stories are regularly published in South Africa’s Daily Maverick, News24, the '' Mail & Guardian'' and '' Financial Mail''. In 2021, the nonprofit was the first media group to receive South Africa’s prestigious Reconciliation Award from the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation. Zulu Language
Zulu (), or isiZulu as an endonym, is a Southern Bantu language of the Nguni branch spoken in Southern Africa. It is the language of the Zulu people, with about 12 million native speakers, who primarily inhabit the province of KwaZulu-Natal of South Africa. Pondoland or Mpondoland (Xhosa language, Xhosa: ''EmaMpondweni''), is a natural region on the South African shores of the Indian Ocean. It is located in the coastal belt of the Eastern Cape province. Its territory is the former Mpondo Kingdom of the Mpondo people. Ulwaluko
Ulwaluko, traditional circumcision and initiation from childhood to adulthood, is an ancient initiation rite practised (though not exclusively) by the Xhosa people, and is commonly practised throughout South Africa. The ritual is traditionally intended as a teaching institution, to prepare young males for the responsibilities of manhood. Therefore, initiates are called ''abakhwetha'' in isiXhosa: ''aba'' means a group, and ''kwetha'' means to learn. A single male in the group is known as an ''umkhwetha''. Diepsloot, Afrikaans for "deep ditch", is a densely populated township in Gauteng, South Africa. It is located in the newly formed Region A (formerly regions 1 and 2) of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. It was controversial for its involvement in corruption allegations exposed during the Zondo Commission of Inquiry. Krugersdorp (Afrikaans for ''Kruger's Town'') is a mining city in the West Rand, Gauteng Province, South Africa founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius. The Lindela Repatriation Centre is a detention centre for undocumented migrants in South Africa. The Lindela Repatriation Centre (Lindela) is one of South Africa's largest facilities for the holding of undocumented migrants.
