Betty Lee Babcock
Betty Lee Babcock (March 11, 1922 – August 4, 2013) was an American businesswoman, politician, and the wife of the Governor of Montana Tim M. Babcock. She served as the First Lady of Montana from 1962 to 1969, as a delegate to the 1972 Montana Constitutional Convention, and as a member of Montana House of Representatives from 1975 to 1977. Early life Born in Aplington, Iowa, on March 11, 1922, Babcock moved to Montana in 1926. She went to Dawson County Junior College. On September 21, 1941, she married Tim M. Babcock, who joined her father's trucking business which later became: Babcock & Lee. Career In 1962, Babcock became Montana's first lady when her husband, then lieutenant governor, became governor upon the death of Donald Nutter. Aplington, Iowa
Aplington is a city in Butler County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,116 at the 2020 census. History In the summer of 1857, the village of Aplington was laid out and platted by the proprietors, Thomas Nash, R. R. Parriott, Zenas Aplington and Theodore A. Wilson on Sec. 29 (of Monroe Township). At the time one house stood on the tract of land, which had been erected and occupied by Charles Savage, a New Englander, a settler of short duration. The town was incorporated in the 1880s and has grown to be a lively and thriving trading point of 500 people. No better soil or finer farms lie out of doors than those contributing to the wealth of the community and with the Iowa division of the Illinois Central Railroad good transportation facilities appreciably add to the desirability of Aplington as a place for business activity and easy communication with the outside world. Montana State Capitol
The Montana State Capitol is the state capitol of the U.S. state of Montana that houses the Montana State Legislature which is located in the state capital of Helena at 1301 East Sixth Avenue. The building was constructed between 1896 and 1902 with wing-annexes added between 1909 and 1912. History A design competition for the building was conducted in 1896. The commission selected a design by George R. Mann as the winner. In 1897, after it was found that the Commission was planning to scam money from the building project, it was disbanded and a second Capitol Commission was convened. The new Commission abandoned Mann's plan as being too costly, and had a second design competition, won by Charles Emlen Bell and John Hackett Kent, of Bell & Kent of Council Bluffs, Iowa. In order to have their design built, Bell & Kent relocated their office to Helena.
