''Betrayed in the Octagon'' is the first album by electronic artist Oneohtrix Point Never, initially credited to "Magic Oneohtrix Point Never". Background The album is the first Lopatin released under the "Oneohtrix Point Never" pseudonym. The album was released initially in 2007 on hand-numbered cassettes on the Deception Island label. It was reissued on vinyl in 2009 under No Fun Records. The album was recorded in Massachusetts with a Roland Juno-60, a Sequential Circuits Six-Trak, and a Roland MSQ-700 Sequencer. Songs from the album were later re-released on the 2009 compilation '' Rifts''. Reception Writing for AllMusic, Fred Thomas wrote that Lopatin " ascadesthrough phrases of haunted elegance and more mellow new age reflection" on the album that started the Oneohtrix Point Never project. Daniel Lopatin (born July 25, 1982), best known as Oneohtrix Point Never or OPN, is an American experimental electronic music producer, composer, singer and songwriter. His music has experimented with tropes from various music genres and eras, sample-based song structures, and elaborate MIDI production. He began releasing synth-based recordings in the mid-2000s and received initial acclaim for the 2009 compilation '' Rifts'', as well as the influential vaporwave release ''Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1'' (2010). He subsequently signed to Warp in 2013, and has released studio albums on the label since. The Roland Juno-60 is an analog synthesizer manufactured by the Roland Corporation between 1982 and 1984. It followed the Juno-6, an almost identical synthesizer released months earlier. The Juno synthesizers introduced Roland's digitally controlled oscillators, allowing for greatly improved tuning stability over its competitors. The Juno-6 and Juno-60 were introduced as low-cost alternatives to polyphonic synths such as the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 and Roland's own Jupiter-8. Its built-in chorus effect was designed to make up for the weaker sound of its single oscillator, and it went on to become its signature effect. The Six-Trak was an analogue synthesizer manufactured by Sequential Circuits in San Jose, California and released in January 1984. It is notable for being one of the first multi-timbral synthesizers, equipped with MIDI and an on-board six-track digital sequencer, hence the name. It was designed as an inexpensive and easily portable 'scratch-pad' machine for trying out arrangements. You can latch the arpeggiator and play along with sequences in real time. Also available is a unison mode which renders the keyboard monophonic but allows for very rich sounding timbres. The album collects Lopatin's early synth-based recordings under the moniker dating back to 2003, including the three limited-run LPs '' Betrayed in the Octagon'' (2007), ''Zones Without People'' (2009) and ''Russian Mind'' (2009), as well as several additional cassette and CD-R releases.
