Bethnal Green Hospital
Bethnal Green Hospital was an acute care hospital, in Bethnal Green in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, England. It opened in 1900, and it closed in 1990. History Bethnal Green Hospital was initially opened as the local workhouse infirmary on Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green in 1900. The 750 bed infirmary was designed by Giles Gough and Trollope and had eleven pavilion style ward blocks. The new infirmary was built on a 4.5 acre site purchased from the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews. The site had contained the Episcopal Jews' Chapel and was known as Palestine Place. When the chapel was demolished the clock was incorporated into the tower of the new infirmaries administration block. During the First World War the hospital became a military hospital between 1915 -1920. The London County Council took over the hospital in 1930. Eva Luckes
Eva Charlotte Ellis Luckes (8 July 1854 – 16 February 1919) was Matron of The London Hospital from 1880 to 1919. Early life Eva Abigail Charlotte Ellis Luckes (she herself spelled her name Lückes with the umlaut) was born in Exeter, Devon on 8 July 1854 into an upper-middle-class family. Her father, Henry Richard Luckes, was a banker who had established a comfortable home for his family in Newnham, Gloucestershire. Miss Luckes, the eldest of three daughters, was educated at Malvern, Cheltenham College and Dresden. She suffered from some physical disablement and had a horse to help her travel about the countryside. After finishing her education she returned to Newnham and helped her mother run the house and visited the sick of the parish. It was this that developed her interest in nursing. HM Prison Holloway
HM Prison Holloway was a closed category prison for adult women and young offenders in Holloway, London, England, operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. It was the largest women's prison in western Europe, until its closure in 2016. History Holloway prison was opened in 1852 as a mixed-sex prison, but due to growing demand for space for female prisoners, particularly due to the closure of Newgate, it became female-only in 1903. Bethnal Green is an area in the East End of London northeast of Charing Cross. The area emerged from the small settlement which developed around the common land, Green, much of which survives today as Bethnal Green Gardens, beside Cambridge Heath Road.
