Bethlehem Sabine Shipyard, or Sabine Shipyard was a 223-acre shipyard of Bethlehem Steel in Port Arthur, Texas. The Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation's Sabine Shipyard opened in August 1985. The yard serviced offshore drilling rigs and ships. The Sabine Shipyard had a nation's largest floating drydock. Bethlehem purchased the United States Navy surplus drydock, USS ABSD-5 that was at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. USS ABSD-5 seven-sections were tugged to the Sabine Yard arriving in December 1984. Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor is an American lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. It was often visited by the Naval fleet of the United States, before it was acquired from the Hawaiian Kingdom by the U.S. with the signing of the Reciprocity Treaty of 1875. USS ABSD-5
USS ABSD-5, later redesignated as AFDB-5, was a nine-section, non-self-propelled, large auxiliary floating drydock of the US Navy. Advance Base Sectional Dock-5 (Auxiliary Floating Dock Big-5) was constructed in sections during 1943 and 1944 by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company in Morgan City, Louisiana for World War II. With all nine sections joined, she was 825 feet long, 28 feet tall (keel to welldeck), and with an inside clear width of 133 feet 7 inches. ABSD-5 had two traveling 15-ton capacity crane with an 85-foot radius and two or more support barges.
