Bessie Wynn (June 1876 – July 8, 1968) was an American stage and vaudeville actress and singer. She was born in Chicago and sang in church choirs while growing up. At 23 in 1899 she first appeared in the chorus of ''Papa's Wife'' starring Anna Held. Helene Anna Held (19 March 1872 – 12 August 1918) was a Polish-French stage performer on Broadway. While appearing in London, she was spotted by impresario Florenz Ziegfeld, who brought her to America as his common-law wife. From 1896 through 1910, she was one of Broadway's most celebrated leading ladies, presented in a succession of musicals as a charming, coquettish Parisian singer and comedienne, with an hourglass figure and an off-stage reputation for exotic behavior, such as bathing in 40 gallons of milk a day to maintain her complexion. Detractors implied that her fame owed more to Ziegfeld's promotional flair than to any intrinsic talent, but her audience allure was undeniable for over a decade, with several of her shows setting house attendance records for their time. Anna Laughlin
Anna Laughlin (October 11, 1885 – April 5, 1937) was an American actress on stage and in silent films. In 1902, she became the first actress to play Dorothy Gale. Early life Anna Laughlin was born in Sacramento, California. She began appearing on stage as a "child elocutionist", and then in vaudeville and touring companies. Career Laughlin went to New York as a young teenager, and was in Broadway shows by 1900's '' The Belle of Bohemia''. In 1902, at age 16, she played Dorothy Gale in a musical production of '' The Wizard of Oz'' that started in Chicago and ran on Broadway through 1904. ''Babes in Toyland'' is an operetta composed by Victor Herbert with a libretto by Glen MacDonough, which wove together various characters from Mother Goose nursery rhymes into a musical extravaganza. Following the extraordinary success of their stage musical '' The Wizard of Oz'', which was produced in New York beginning in January 1903, producer Fred R. Mabel Barrison (April 21, 1882 - November 1, 1912) was a Canadian born American stage actress and singer in the first decade of the 20th century. She was born Eva Farrance and joined a musical chorus while still in her teens. She appeared in vaudeville and on Broadway with Weber and Fields and was spotted by stage director Julian Mitchell for a role in the 1903 '' Babes in Toyland''. "The Blue Mouse" was written by Clyde Fitch and Fitch himself selected Barrison for a role in the play. Barrison was plagued by health problems the last two years of her life. She died on November 1, 1912 in Toronto at the age of 30. The Palace Theatre is a Broadway theater at 1564 Broadway, facing Times Square, in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Designed by Milwaukee architects Kirchoff & Rose, the theater was funded by Martin Beck and opened in 1913. From its opening to about 1929, the Palace was considered among vaudeville performers as the flagship of Benjamin Franklin Keith and Edward Franklin Albee II's organization.
