Alvah Bessie
Alvah Cecil Bessie (June 4, 1904 – July 21, 1985) was an American novelist, journalist and screenwriter who was blacklisted by the movie studios for being one of the Hollywood Ten who refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Early life Alvah Bessie was born to a Jewish family, the younger of two sons of Daniel Nathan Cohen Bessie and Adeline Schlesinger Bessie. Bessie's father was an inventor and successful businessman and the family lived a comfortable life in a prosperous section of Harlem in New York City. He graduated from Dewitt Clinton High School where he had the reputation of being a rebellious student. He subsequently enrolled in Columbia University in 1920, graduating in 1924 with a B.A. in English. In 1922, the Bessie family finances had taken a serious downturn after which the elder Bessie died. Bessie (lake Monster)
In northeastern Ohio and Michigan folklore, Bessie is a name given to a lake monster in Lake Erie, also known as South Bay Bessie or simply The Lake Erie Monster. The first recorded sighting of Bessie occurred in 1817, and more sightings have occurred intermittently and in greater frequency in the last three decades. Bessie is reported to be snake-like and long, at least a foot in diameter, with a grayish color. Sightings While shooting at ducks north of Sandusky, Ohio, in 1793, the captain of the sloop ''Felicity'' startled a large creature (snake) described as "more than a rod (16 ½ ft.) in length" July 1817, the crew of a schooner reported a long serpent, dark in color. Bessie (narrowboat)
Bessie is a historic, single ended riveted iron day boat, built in 1895 for the Hartshill Iron Company. It is now owned by the Black Country Living Museum, Dudley, West Midlands, England, where it is based. These open 'day' boats worked short distances carrying bulk cargoes such as coal and iron ore. The name refers to the short journey, where the crew would take the boat to its destination and then swap to another, empty boat to sail home the same day. Though often referred to as a 'Joey', a Joey was a double prow ended vessel that moved the rudder from one end to the other, so it didn't need to be turned around in a congested canal Although most working boats at the time were wooden, larger firms used riveted iron boats like this one as though more expensive to build they lasted longer. Chris Albertson
Christiern Gunnar Albertson (October 18, 1931 – April 24, 2019) was a New York City-based jazz journalist, writer and record producer. Early life Albertson was born in Reykjavík, Iceland, on October 18, 1931, but his father left the family before he was a year old. Yvonne, his mother, married three more times. He was educated in Iceland, Denmark and England before studying commercial art in Copenhagen. In 1947, while living in Copenhagen, Albertson listened by chance to a Bessie Smith recording on radio; it led to an abiding interest in jazz and blues music. "We found magic in such names as Kid Ory, King Oliver, Johnny Dodds, Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey," he wrote on his ''Stomp Off'' blog in 2010.
