Bent Rasmussen
Bent Rasmussen (born 13 July 1957) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark. Career Rasmussen made his British leagues debut in 1977, when he joined the Hackney Hawks for the 1977 British League season. The following season he continued to ride for Hackney before switching to the King's Lynn Stars. Although his 1978 British league performances were below expectation he won the Danish Final (world championship round) held in Fjelsted. Rasmussen continued to ride for King's Lynn in 1979 and 1980 and also represented the Denmark national speedway team at the 1979 Speedway World Team Cup. During the 1980 Danish speedway season he won the bronze medal in the Danish Championship. His final season in Britain was in 1981, with the Cradley Heathens Cradley Heathens was a motorcycle speedway team from Dudley, England. 1978 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1978 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 33rd edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. Ole Olsen won his third world crown. The final was sponsored by the Sunday Mirror and was attended by 86,500. Gordon Kennett took silver on the day of his 25th birthday and American Scott Autrey won the bronze medal run-off defeating Dave Jessup and Jerzy Rembas. Dave Jessup was effectively denied a World title when after leading in heat 3 he suffered a bike malfunction and finished last in the heat. He then scored 11 points from his remaining rides which would have been enough to take the crown if he had won heat 3. Denmark is one of the major teams in international speedway. They are managed by Denmark's most successful speedway rider, four time Individual World Champion Hans Nielsen and the current captain is Niels-Kristian Iversen. They have won the Speedway World Cup / Speedway World Team Cup a record 15 occasions with team manager Nielsen being a rider on 11 of those teams. The 1978 Gulf British League season was the 44th season of the top tier of speedway in the United Kingdom and the 14th season known as the British League. Summary The list of nineteen teams that competed in the league was identical to the previous season. The league was sponsored by Gulf Oil for a fourth season. Coventry Bees won their second title and their first for ten years. Belle Vue Aces were runners-up for the fourth time in five seasons and would receive a double blow when losing in the final of the Knockout Cup. Two time world champion Ole Olsen was in sensational form for Coventry and made the difference throughout the season. Olsen would also seal his third world individual crown by the end of the season.
