Benjamin Brown (1859 – September 5, 1910) was a Buffalo Soldier in the United States Army and a recipient of America's highest military decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions during the Wham Paymaster Robbery in the Indian Wars of the western United States. Biography Brown was born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, in 1859. He enlisted in the Army, and served in Companies C and H, as well as the Band, in the 24th Infantry Regiment. Over his career, Brown held the ranks of Private, Corporal, Sergeant, and Drum Major. He served in several places in the American West, as well as in the Philippines. On May 11, 1889, Brown was serving as a Sergeant in Company C of the 24th Infantry in the Arizona Territory when his unit was involved in an engagement with robbers during the Wham Paymaster Robbery. Spotsylvania County is a county in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the July 2021 estimate, the population was 143,676. Its county seat is Spotsylvania Courthouse. The Certificate of Merit Medal replaced the much older Certificate of Merit which was authorized by the United States Congress on March 3, 1847. The United States Army Center of Military History (CMH) is a directorate within the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command.
