Benchley, Texas
Benchley is a small Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Brazos County, Texas, Brazos and Robertson County, Texas, Robertson counties, Texas, United States, with a population of approximately 100. The community is named after the first freight conductor of the Houston and Texas Central Railway, Henry Benchley. It was settled between 1829 and 1834 by Irish Americans, Irish immigrants, originally named Stagger's Point. History Many of Benchley's residents left because of the Runaway Scrape, runaway scrape, which occurred between September 1835 and April 1836. Around the 1840s, a band of criminals posed as preachers, and while one gave a sermon, the others attempted to make off with several horses. Residents went after them, and some of the thieves were killed. The residents were then able to get back their horses. Along with Brazoria County, the county is named for the Brazos River, which forms its western border. The county was formed in 1841 and organized in 1843. The Houston and Texas Central Railway (H&TC), was an 872-mile (1403-km) railway system chartered in Texas in 1848, with construction beginning in 1856. The line eventually stretched from Houston northward to Dallas and Denison, Texas. with branches to Austin and Waco. History Ebenezer Allen of Galveston, Texas obtained the charter to establish a railroad company on March 11, 1848. A series of meetings about the establishment of the company occurred in Chappell Hill and Houston. In 1852, the Galveston and Red River Railway (G&RR) company became active. Runaway Scrape
The Runaway Scrape events took place mainly between September 1835 and April 1836 and were the evacuations by Texas residents fleeing the Mexican Army of Operations during the Texas Revolution, from the Battle of the Alamo through the decisive Battle of San Jacinto. The ''ad interim'' government of the new Republic of Texas and much of the civilian population fled eastward ahead of the Mexican forces. The conflict arose after Antonio López de Santa Anna abrogated the 1824 Constitution of Mexico and established martial law in Coahuila y Tejas. The Texians resisted and declared their independence. It was Sam Houston's responsibility, as the appointed commander-in-chief of the Texian Army, Provisional Army of Texas (before such an army actually existed), to recruit and train a military force to defend the population against troops led by Santa Anna.
