The Jets (Minnesota Band)
The Jets are a Tongan-American family band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, composed of brothers and sisters LeRoy, Eddie, Eugene, Haini, Rudy, Kathi, Elizabeth, and Moana Wolfgramm, who perform pop, R&B, and dance music. They started performing as a family band in 1977. The group enjoyed worldwide success in 1985–1990, performing three world tours, and producing five top-10 hits on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Background The original band consisted of the eight oldest children of Maikeli "Mike" and Vaké Wolfgramm, who were originally from Tonga. MCA Records was an American record label owned by MCA Inc., which later became part of Universal Music Group. Pre-history MCA Inc., a powerful talent agency and a television production company, entered the recorded music business in 1962 with the purchase of the New York-based US Decca Records (established in 1934), including Coral Records and Brunswick Records. MCA was forced to exit the talent agency business in order to complete the merger. As American Decca owned Universal Pictures, MCA assumed full ownership of Universal and made it into a top film studio, producing several hits. David Rivkin (born 1953), professionally known as David Z, is an American music producer, engineer, and songwriter from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is best known for his long-standing work with Prince, and has contributed to albums by Etta James, Billy Idol, BoDeans, Buddy Guy and Neneh Cherry. Rivkin was a member of Lipps Inc, with whom he had a US #1 and UK #2 hit with "Funkytown" (1979). He also produced Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy" (1988), creating the song's signature snare drum sound. As of 2021, Rivkin is based in Los Angeles, California. ''Magic'' is the third album by the Jets. It was released by MCA Records in 1987. It was the first album without Eugene Wolfgramm, who left the group to form Boys Club. The album spawned multiple hit singles. " Cross My Broken Heart" also appeared on the soundtrack to ''Beverly Hills Cop II''. The album included their first US dance chart number 1 hit " Sendin' All My Love", as well as "Make It Real", which stayed at the top of the adult contemporary chart for 4 weeks and cracked the top five on the US pop chart, peaking at number 4.
