The men's 110 metres hurdles event at the 1928 Olympic Games took place between July 31 & August 1. Forty-one athletes from 24 nations competed. The event was won by Sydney Atkinson of South Africa, the nation's first title in the 110 metres hurdles; Atkinson became the first man to win two medals in the event (he had taken silver in 1924). It was only the second time the United States had not won the event; as in 1920, the Americans took silver and bronze. René Joannes-Powell
René Michel Emile Joannes-Powell (11 February 1896 – 11 May 1940) was a Belgian hurdler. He had played football for FC Liege until in 1910 he joined in a cross-country run that led him to branch out into track and field sports. Gérald Bertheloot
Gerard Bertheloot (5 January 1906 – 5 October 1950) was a Belgian middle-distance runner. He competed in the men's 800 metres at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Biography Bertheloot was born in Rollegem-Kapelle in West Flanders in 1908. He moved to Kortrijk, where he was employed in a bicycle factory. He appears to have been a member of the Union Sportive Gantoise athletics club in Ghent. In 1928, Bertheloot competed in the Olympic Games which were held in Amsterdam. Bertheloot ran in the 1st heat of the men's 800 metres, which was held on 29 July 1928 at the Olympic Stadium.
