Being Esther
''Being Esther'' (Minneapolis: Milkweed Editions, 2013) is the first novel by Miriam Karmel. It explores the life of an 85-year-old widow, Esther Lustig, who is fully experiencing her days during which she may move from her home. She is currently living alone in a Chicago apartment building, and feels comfortable there, but her over-involved adult daughter wants her to move to an assisted-living facility or "Bingoville". This novel explores aging and related aspects and maintaining friendships, maintaining boundaries, and maintaining one's choices over one's life. "Esther has the urge to tell them that growing old is one of the most surprising things that has happened to her," wrote the '' Twin Cities Daily Planet'', calling the novel "a bittersweet joy". Miriam Karmel
Miriam Karmel is an American writer. Her first novel, '' Being Esther'' (2013), is one of only a few involving characters in their eighties. Karmel's writing has appeared in numerous publications including Bellevue Literary Review, ''The Talking Stick'', ''Pearl'', ''Dust & Fire'', ''Passager Books'', ''Jewish Women's Literary Annual'', and ''Water~Stone Review''. She is the recipient of Minnesota Monthly's 2002 Tamarack Award, the Kate Braverman Short Story Prize, and the Arthur Edelstein Prize for Short Fiction. Her story ''The King of Marvin Gardens'' was anthologized in Milkweed Editions' ''Fiction on a Stick''. Life Karmel was born in Chicago, Illinois. She earned a degree in history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a master's in American labor history from the University of Rochester, and a master's in journalism from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that launched her journalism career. Milkweed Editions
Milkweed Editions is an independent nonprofit literary publisher that originated from the ''Milkweed Chronicle'' literary and arts journal established in Minneapolis in 1979. The journal ceased and the business transitioned to publishing. It releases eighteen to twenty new books each year in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Star Tribune
The ''Star Tribune'' is the largest newspaper in Minnesota. It originated as the ''Minneapolis Tribune'' in 1867 and the competing ''Minneapolis Daily Star'' in 1920. Milkweed Editions Books
''Asclepias'' is a genus of herbaceous, perennial, flowering plants known as milkweeds, named for their latex, a milky substance containing cardiac glycosides termed cardenolides, exuded where cells are damaged. Most species are toxic to humans and many other species, primarily due to the presence of cardenolides, although, as with many such plants, there are species that feed upon them (e.g. their leaves) and from them (e.g. their nectar). Most notable are monarch butterflies, who use and require certain milkweeds as host plants for their larvae. The genus contains over 200 species distributed broadly across Africa, North America, and South America. It previously belonged to the family Asclepiadaceae, which is now classified as the subfamily Asclepiadoideae of the dogbane family, Apocynaceae.
