Begolli Family
The Begolli are an Albanian noble family which rose to prominence in present-day Kosovo in the Ottoman era and were an influential feudal family in the region. The Begolli were influential in Rrafshi i Dukagjinit (Metohije) area, Plav- Gusinje, and down to Shkodër. They were landowners and held private armies. Their first known member may have been Mere Hüseyin Pasha, Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. The Albanian Congress of Trieste ( sq, Kongresi Shqiptar i Triestës) was a congress of Albanians held in Trieste, Austria-Hungary in the period between 27 February – 6 March 1913, organized by Faik Konica and Sotir Kolea with strong support from the Austrian authorities. Developments The Provisional Government of Albania sent Kristo Meksi as its emissary to the Albanian Congress of Trieste. Baron Franz Nopcsa who participated in the work of the congress, published his notes on the congress that became of particular historical interest. The participants of the congress included Fan Noli, Albert Ghica, Baron Juan Pedro Aladro Kastriota, Nikolla Ivanaj, Giuseppe Schirò, and Terenzio Tocci. Mahmut Pasha of Begolli or Mahmut Pasha (Turkish: Mahmut Mahmutbeyoglu or Mahmud Beyoğlu) was an Ottoman Albanian military commander of the Begolli family and Pasha of Peja, Sanjakbey of Dukagjin and later Beylerbey of Rumelia The Albanians participated in the siege of Vienna in 1683 as the personal bodyguard of Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa. Mahmut Pasha is a heroic figure in Albanian folklore and oral tradition. Tribal fights In 1690, the Begolli fought the Gashi tribe and forced them to settle in Llap as punishment for their anti-Ottoman stance during the Austro-Turkish War of 1683-1699. Qazim Begolli was an Albanian nationalist and activist of the Kachak movement of 20th century. Activity Begolli was member of powerful and influential Begolli family from İpek. They were the first sanjak-beys in the area Shkodër- Dukagjin (Metohije). Qazim Begolli was active during the World War I and after. With Hasan Prishtina and others he organized insurgencies and attacks against the Serbian forces stationed in Kosovo. In February 1915 he participated in the Battle of Zhur near Prizren.
