Highland Light Infantry
The Highland Light Infantry (HLI) was a light infantry regiment of the British Army formed in 1881. It took part in the First and Second World Wars, until it was amalgamated with the Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1959 to form the Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret's Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment) which later merged with the Royal Scots Borderers, the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment), the Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons) and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders to form the Royal Regiment of Scotland, becoming the 2nd Battalion of the new regiment. Baron St John Of Bletso
Baron St John of Bletso, in the County of Bedford, is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1582 for Oliver St John. For a period, the title Baron St John was subsumed within the title Earl of Bolingbroke which was granted to the fourth Baron. The Earldom died out with the third Earl, but the Barony continued via another branch which had since become the baronet line. The eldest son of the 1st Earl was advanced to the barony by Writ of acceleration under King Charles I to become the 5th Baron. However he died in the civil war without becoming Earl, This resulted in the existence of an additional baron in the sequence but this was not taken into account by the family when the barony was continued. Hence there is a discrepancy between the complete numbered series used by Burke and Debrett, and the numbering series in use by the family, particularly in the 18th and 19th century. Henry Beauchamp Oliver St John, 18th Baron St John of Bletso DL (24 June 1876 – 17 October 1920) was an English peer. He was the eldest son of Beauchamp St John, 17th Baron St John of Bletso, and his wife Helen Thornton. He was educated at Wellington College and Magdalene College, Cambridge. On 26 July 1901, he was made a deputy lieutenant of Bedfordshire. Henry became the 17th Lord St John on the death of his father in 1912, and inherited Melchbourne Park. He was a JP for Bedfordshire and described as Church of England Conservative. He owned about and gave his interests as county pursuits and county business. He died unmarried at the age of 44 and was succeeded by his younger brother, Moubray. Moubray St Andrew Thornton St John, 19th Baron St John of Bletso DL JP (5 November 1877 – 28 October 1934) was an English peer. Life St John was the second son of Beauchamp St John, 17th Baron St John of Bletso and Helen Charlotte, née Thornton. He was educated at Wellington College. Following the outbreak of the Second Boer War he volunteered for service with the Imperial Yeomanry, and served in South Africa from 1899 to 1902. He took part in operations in Transvaal in May and June 1900, including actions at Johannesburg and Pretoria. In October 1900 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 1st battalion of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, stationed in South Africa, and the following year served in Transvaal, west of Pretoria. He was promoted to lieutenant on 12 May 1902. He later served in World War I, having rejoined the army in the Reserve of Officers, and in 1918 was a captain in the Bedfordshire Regiment. George Lawson Johnston, 1st Baron Luke, KBE (9 September 1873 – 23 February 1943), was a British businessman. Early life and education Luke was the second son of John Lawson Johnston, a butcher who became a beef stock manufacturer and the founder of Bovril Ltd and Elizabeth, daughter of George Lawson, biscuit manufacturer of Edinburgh. He was educated privately in Canada, at Dulwich College and at Blairlodge School, Polmont (a former Scottish private school). Career Johnston worked in Canada, Australia, Africa and Argentina, and thereby developed expertise in trade and raw materials. He returned from Argentina in 1896 and joined the board of Bovril Ltd, of which he became vice-chairman in 1900 when his father died. Samuel Howard Whitbread (8 January 1858 – 29 July 1944) was a British Member of Parliament and a member of the Whitbread brewing family. Career He was the son of Samuel Whitbread.
