Beadle
A beadle, sometimes spelled bedel, is an official of a church or synagogue who may usher, keep order, make reports, and assist in religious functions; or a minor official who carries out various civil, educational, or ceremonial duties on the manor. The term has pre-Conquest origins in Old English, deriving from the Old English ''bydel'' ("herald, messenger from an authority, preacher"), itself deriving from ''beodan'' ("to proclaim", which has a modern descendant in the English verb ''bid''). In Old English it was a title given to an Anglo-Saxon officer who summoned householders to council. It is also known in Medieval Latin as ''bedellus''. The Domesday Book refers to Beadles as ''bedelli'' or undersheriffs of manors. In religion In England, the word came to refer to a parish constable of the Anglican Church, one often charged with duties of charity. Jeremy John Beadle (28 April 1956 – 27 December 1995) was a British critic, writer, and broadcaster. He was born in York and educated at the York Cathedral choir school and then at St Peter's, York. He was a presenter on BBC Radio 3. Thomas Beadle (born March 22, 1987) is an American politician from the U.S. state, state of North Dakota. A Republican Party (United States), Republican, he is the North Dakota State Treasurer. Beadle was previously a member of the North Dakota House of Representatives. Career Beadle graduated from Concordia College (Moorhead, Minnesota), Concordia College. He has worked as a realtor and business manager of a graphic design firm. Beadle was first elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 2010, succeeding Lee Myxter, who did not run for reelection to run for a seat in the North Dakota Senate. Beadle ran for North Dakota State Treasurer in the 2020 elections. Peter Clifford William James Beadle (born 13 May 1972) is an English football manager and former player who was recently manager of club Yate Town. A former player, Beadle played as a forward and he scored some 83 goals in 355 league games, mostly for the two Bristol clubs. He started his career at Gillingham in 1989 and won a £300,000 move to Tottenham Hotspur two years later. However, he never made a first team appearance for "Spurs" and was instead loaned out to AFC Bournemouth and Southend United, before he was transferred to Watford in September 1994. He moved on to Bristol Rovers a year later and after an impressive spell with the club was signed by Port Vale for £300,000 in August 1998. Beadle County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 19,149. Its county seat is Huron. The county was created in 1879 and organized in 1880. Beadle County comprises the Huron, SD Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Beadle County, named for Brigadier General William Henry Harrison Beadle, was created by the Dakota Territory Legislature in 1879, and was organized in 1880 with the appointment of three county commissioners by Governor Nehemiah G. Ordway. The first town within Beadle County was Cavour, but Huron was named the county seat when the county commissioners first met there in July 1880. Jean Beadle (born Jane Miller; 1 January 1868 – 22 May 1942) was an Australian feminist, social worker and Labor party member. Life Jane Miller was born on 1 January 1868 in Clunes, Victoria, daughter of George Darlington Miller, miner and his wife Jane Spencer. She left school early to assist her widowed father. She worked in Melbourne's oppressive clothing factories until her marriage to Henry Beadle (a militant and an iron moulder) on 19 May 1888. She was involved in industrial action, working with striking miners and their families and organised a union of female factory workers. She joined the Women's Suffrage Alliance and, from 1898, was prominent in the Women's Political and Social Crusade.
