Beachcombing is an activity that consists of an individual "combing" (or searching) the beach and the intertidal zone, looking for things of value, interest or utility. A beachcomber is a person who participates in the activity of beachcombing. Despite these general definitions, beachcombing and beachcomber are words with multiple, but related, meanings that have evolved over time. Historical usage The first appearance of the word "beachcombers" in print was in Richard Henry Dana Jr.'s ''Two Years Before the Mast'' (1840) and later referenced in Herman Melville's '' Omoo'' (1847). It described a population of Europeans who lived in South Pacific islands, "combing" the beach and nearby water for flotsam, jetsam, or anything else they could use or trade. Beachcomber is a ''nom de plume'' that has been used by several journalists writing a long-running humorous column in the '' Daily Express''. Beachcomber (also known as Tai) is a small, private island within the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji in the South Pacific, which in turn are a part of Fiji's Western Division, Fiji, Western Division. Geography Beachcomber Island, also known as Tai, is one of the resort islands of Fiji, located about 18 km west of Lautoka, the second largest city of the state, located on the main island of Viti Levu. The Mamanuca Islands () of Fiji are a volcanic archipelago lying to the west of Nadi and to the south of the Yasawa Islands.
