Beach Volleyball At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Men's Tournament
The men's beach volleyball tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, United Kingdom, took place between 28 July and 9 August at Horse Guards Parade. Twenty-four pairs were competing, including one from Great Britain as the host country, and a maximum of two from each nation. Sixteen qualified through positioning in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Rankings as of 17 June 2012, five others earned their places at the 2010–12 Continental Beach Volleyball Cup, and the final three from the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification tournament. Seeds Preliminary round The composition of the preliminary rounds was announced confirmed on 19 July 2012 in a draw held in Klagenfurt, Austria. Teams are awarded two points for a win and one for a loss. If two teams are tied at the end of pool play, the tiebreakers is their head-to-head match. Horse Guards Parade is a large parade ground off Whitehall in central London (at grid reference ). It is the site of the annual ceremonies of Trooping the Colour, which commemorates the monarch's official birthday, and the Beating Retreat. History Horse Guards Parade was formerly the site of the Palace of Whitehall's tiltyard, where tournaments (including jousting) were held in the time of Henry VIII. It was also the scene of annual celebrations of the birthday of Queen Elizabeth I. The area has been used for a variety of reviews, parades and other ceremonies since the 17th century. The adjacent Horse Guards building was once the Headquarters of the British Army. The Duke of Wellington was based in Horse Guards when he was Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. Sean Michael Rosenthal (born June 19, 1980) is an American beach volleyball player, playing as a defender. He is best known for his high leaping ability, which has earned him the nickname of "Superman". Rosenthal has an entourage called "Rosie's Raiders", which is composed of close friends of his who enjoy going to his various tournaments to support him. He and his former partner, Jake Gibb, represented the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games and 2012 Olympic Games in beach volleyball. Adrián Gavira Collado (born 17 September 1987 in La Línea de la Concepción) is a Spanish beach volleyball player. He currently plays with Pablo Herrera. Xu Linyin (Simplified Chinese:, born 20 March 1986 in Shanghai) is a Chinese professional beach volleyball player. Career Nicknamed "Giant" because of his height, Xu Linyin stands 6 feet 7 inches tall. He headed into the 2008 Olympics as the #1 seed with his teammate Penggen Wu. They placed 5th in the FIVB Beach Volleyball Olympic Ranking, but were #1 seed because of FIVB regulations. Mariusz Prudel (born 21 January 1986) is a male beach volleyball player from Poland. He competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics with his partner Grzegorz Fijałek. Ricardo Alex Costa Santos (born January 6, 1975 in Salvador da Bahia) is a beach volleyball player from Brazil. Santos won the silver medal in the men's beach volleyball competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics with partner Zé Marco de Melo. Santos also represented his native country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
