Bazartete
Bazartete (also known as Bazar Tete) is a village located in East Timor, comprising a subdistrict of Liquiçá District, located on a mountain top deep in the rain forest, just to the southeast of Liquiçá township. The area and its surrounding villages was the site of numerous cases of intimidation, rape and murder committed by members of the Besi Merah Putih militia group following and during the autonomy vote of 1999. Besi Merah Putih
Besi Merah Putih (also known as BMP), meaning ' red and white iron' in Indonesian, is the official name of an East Timor pro-Indonesia militia operating in the district of Liquiçá, and originating in the village of Maubara. Acts of murder, torture and intimidation It was one of the most feared of all the militia in East Timor, and was responsible for the arson, murder, torture, rape, and intimidation of hundreds of East Timorese citizens during the 1999 pullout from East Timor by the military of Indonesia, and in the time leading up to the referendum for independence. Brigida Antónia Correia (born 1964 in Bazartete, Portuguese Timor) is a politician from East Timor. She has been a member of the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) party since 2007. Priot to that, she had been a member of the Partido Trabalhista since 2000. Career From 2000 to 2014 Correia was a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture at the National University of East Timor (UNTL). She studied for her PhD at Gadjah Mada University, Universitas Gadjah Mada; her thesis examined Peanut, peanut cultivation. She was also director of the non-governmental organization Vecom from 2005 to 2012. Correia has been a member of the East Timorese 2007 East Timorese parliamentary election, national parliament since 2007. From 2009 to 2011 she was Vice President of the National Guidelines Commission of the CNRT. Since 2011 she has been an ordinary member of the commission. Liquiçá District
Liquiçá (Tetum: ''Likisá'') is a coastal city in East Timor, 32 km to the west of Dili, the national capital. Liquiçá is the capital of Liquiçá District. The city has a population of 5,005 inhabitants. History A part of the colonial administration of East Timor was arrested in Maubara and Liquiçá during the Japanese occupation of East Timor from 1942 - 1945. As a consequence the two towns where spared from the air raids which devastated the rest of the island. On 6 April 1999, in the campaign of intimidation and violence that preceded the referendum for East Timorese independence, about 200 persons were killed in the Liquiçá Church Massacre, when members of the Besi Merah Putih militia, supported by Indonesian soldiers and police, attacked the parish church ''Igreja de São João de Brito''. Intimidation
Intimidation is to "make timid or make fearful"; or to induce fear. This includes intentional behaviors of forcing another person to experience general discomfort such as humiliation, embarrassment, inferiority, limited freedom, etc and the victim might be targeted based on multiple factors like gender, race, class, skin color, competency, knowledge, wealth, temperament, etc. Intimidation is done for making the other person submissive (also known as cowing), to destabilize/undermine the other, to force compliance, to hide one's insecurities, to socially valorize oneself, etc. There are active and passive coping mechanisms against intimidation that include, and not limited to not letting the intimidator cross your personal space, addressing their behavior directly, avoiding the person, being gingerly around them, honing breakaway skills, etc. Victims of intimidation would reasonably develop apprehension, experience fear of injury or harm, etc from the unwanted behaviors or tools of ...
