Bayside (LIRR Station)
Bayside (formerly Bay Side) is a station on the Long Island Rail Road's Port Washington Branch in the Bayside neighborhood of Queens, New York City. The station is located at 213th Street and 41st Avenue, off Bell Boulevard and just north of Northern Boulevard, and is 12.6 miles (20.3 km) from Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. The station is part of CityTicket. History Bayside station was originally built on October 27, 1866, by the North Shore Railroad of Long Island, a subsidiary of the New York and Flushing Railroad. The station, along with the rest of the line was acquired by the Flushing and North Side Rail Road in 1869. The F&NS was consolidated into the Flushing, North Shore and Central Railroad in 1874 through a merger with the Central Railroad of Long Island, only to be leased in 1876 by the LIRR. Bayside is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is bounded by Whitestone to the northwest, the Long Island Sound and Little Neck Bay to the northeast, Douglaston to the east, Oakland Gardens to the south, and Fresh Meadows to the west. Murray Hill is a station on the Long Island Rail Road's Port Washington Branch in the Murray Hill subsection of Flushing in Queens, New York City. The station is part of CityTicket. The station is located beneath 150th Street and 41st Avenue, just south of Roosevelt Avenue and is 10.3 miles (16.6 km) from Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. History Murray Hill station was originally built in April 1889, and torn down in 1912 when the Port Washington branch was depressed below grade in this area between 1912 and 1914. The station house was replaced in July 1914 with one built on a bridge built over the tracks. This structure was torn down in 1964, and Murray Hill continues to operate as an unmanned station to this day. Minor renovations took place between 1991 and 1993. The station is on 192nd Street between Station Road and 39th Avenue, three blocks north of Northern Boulevard and is 11.7 miles (18.8 km) from Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. History Auburndale station was originally built in 1901, the year the community itself was developed. The original station house was sold and converted into an Episcopal Church on 42nd Avenue and Utopia Parkway when a new elevated station was built in 1930 as part of a grade crossing elimination project. 2005 New York City Transit Strike
The 2005 New York City transit strike, held from December 20 through 22, 2005, was the third strike ever by the Transport Workers Union Local 100 against New York City's Transit Authority and involved between 32,000 and 34,000 strikers. In December 2005, the TWU Local 100 called a strike in New York City. Negotiations for a new contract with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) broke down over retirement, pension, and wage increases. The strike began at 3:00 a.m. EST on December 20.
