Basketball In Spain
Basketball is the second most popular sport in Spain, directly behind association football. The top Spanish League, Liga ACB, is a member of ULEB, and the top Spanish League teams can compete in Europe, most notably in the Euroleague and Eurocup, and also under the FIBA Europe umbrella, in the FIBA Europe Cup. The Spanish teams also compete in a national domestic cup competition each year, called the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto, which is played by the top eight teams in the standings of the Liga ACB, at the end of the first half of the regular season. Spanish Basketball Federation
The Spanish Basketball Federation ( es, Federación Española de Baloncesto; FEB) is the governing body of basketball in Spain. It is based in Madrid, Spain. It was founded on 31 July 1923 as ''Federación Española de Basketball'' in Barcelona, Spain. It oversees the Spanish top professional basketball league: the Liga ACB, even though it is organized by Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (ACB). It organizes the LEB Oro, the LEB Plata and the Liga EBA. It is also responsible for appointing the management of the men's, women's, and youth national basketball teams. As of 2020, the federation has 3,361 registered clubs and 376,352 federated basketball players, being the second biggest federation after the Football Federation. European Basketball Championship For Small Countries
The FIBA European Championship for Small Countries is the lowest-ranked tier of the biennial FIBA EuroBasket competition, organized by FIBA Europe. History This championship was first introduced in 1988, as the Promotion Cup, the competition organized for the lowest ranked European national basketball teams. Island Games
The Island Games (currently known as the NatWest International Island Games for sponsorship reasons) are biennial international multi-sports events organised by the International Island Games Association (IIGA). Competitor teams each represent different island communities (with one team from the peninsula of Gibraltar) which are IIGA members. Currently all competitor teams represent non-sovereign territories of European nations—some within European waters and some further overseas. The most recent edition was the 2019, which took place in Gibraltar with around 2,000 competitors from 22 islands or island groups participating in 14 sports. Liga Femenina 2 is the second division of the women's league of basketball in Spain. It was founded in 2001. Competition format Teams in this league are divided into two groups by geographical criteria. The top four teams of each one, qualify to the promotion playoffs. In these playoffs, the qualified teams are divided into two groups of four teams, where the two top teams qualify to the Finals. The two winners of the finals promote to Liga Femenina. Until 2005, the promotion playoff consisted in best-of-three games series between the top four teams of each group. The Liga Femenina de Baloncesto, also known as Liga Femenina Endesa for sponsorship reasons, is the highest level of sports league, league competition for women's basketball in Spain.
