The women's tournament of basketball at the 1992 Summer Olympics at Barcelona, Spain, began on July 30 and ended on August 7, when the CIS women's national basketball team, Unified Team defeated China women's national basketball team, China 76–66 for the gold medal. Participants * * * * * * * * Format * Two groups of four teams are formed, where the top two from each group advance to the knockout stage. * Third and fourth places from each group form an additional bracket to decide 5th–8th places in the final ranking. * The winning teams from the semifinals contest the gold medal. Maria Paula Gonçalves da Silva (born March 11, 1962, in Osvaldo Cruz, São Paulo), nicknamed "Magic Paula", is a retired Brazilian women's basketball player. Catarina Pollini (born 16 March 1966) is a retired Italian basketball player. She competed in the women's tournament at the 1992 Summer Olympics and the 1996 Summer Olympics. Pollini also played one short season in the WNBA with the Houston Comets in 1997.
