Basketball At The 1956 Summer Olympics
Basketball at the 1956 Summer Olympics was the fourth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. Fifteen nations, an unusually low number for the basketball tournament, competed in the event, with 174 participants. A total number of 56 games of basketball were played. The teams were divided into four pools, with four teams in three of the pools and only three in the fourth. Every team played against each other team in its pool once. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the quarterfinals, where again they were split into pools of four. Teams again played every other team in their pool, with the top two in each advancing to the semifinal and the bottom two entering a pool for 5th through 8th places. Eliminated teams also played in consolation matches with the same structure as the quarterfinals and finals, but for 9th through 15th places. The games were held at the Royal Exhibition Building. 1956 Summer Olympics
The 1956 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVI Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event held in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, from 22 November to 8 December 1956, with the exception of the equestrian events, which were held in Stockholm, Sweden, in June 1956. These Games were the first to be staged in the Southern Hemisphere and Oceania, as well as the first to be held outside Europe and North America. Melbourne is the most southerly city ever to host the Olympics. Due to the Southern Hemisphere's seasons being different from those in the Northern Hemisphere, the 1956 Games did not take place at the usual time of year, because of the need to hold the events during the warmer weather of the host's spring/summer (which corresponds to the Northern Hemisphere's autumn/winter), resulting in the only summer games ever to be held in November and December. Burdette Eliele "Burdie" Haldorson (born January 12, 1934) is a former American basketball player who competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics and in the Basketball at the 1960 Summer Olympics, 1960 Summer Olympics. Haldorson played college basketball for the Colorado Buffaloes men's basketball, Colorado Buffaloes. He was part of the American basketball team that won the gold medal in 1956. Jānis Krūmiņš (30 January 1930 – 20 November 1994) was a Soviet- Latvian professional basketball player. Helped by his height (about 220 cm, or 7'3"), he was the first giant center that dominated under European baskets, for years. As a player of the senior Soviet Union national basketball team, Krūmiņš won 3 gold medals at the 1959, 1961, and 1963 EuroBaskets, as well as 3 silver medals at the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Summer Olympic Games. Robert Eugene Jeangerard (June 20, 1933 – July 5, 2014) was an American basketball player who competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics. Born in Evanston, Illinois, Jeangerard played collegiately at the University of Colorado. He then played for the Phillips 66ers in the NIBL (National Industrial Basketball League). The Phillips 66ers won the Olympic Trials in 1956, and Jeangerard was one of five players from the Phillips 66ers selected for the 1956 Olympic team, along with their coach, Gerald Tucker. Bill Russell and K.C.Jones, two-time NCAA Champions from the University of San Francisco, were also on the 1956 Olympic team, which won the gold medal.
